DANONE NATIONS CUP NORTH WEST AND MPUMALANGA PROVINCIAL FINALS - RESULTS

Mhlahle Primary School from the Bushbuckridge Region showed that determination and hard work can make dreams come true when they were crowned Mpumalanga’s Danone Nations Cup Provincial champions after beating Dumelani Primary School from Nkangala Region 1 – 0.  The games were held at the Ackerville Stadium in Witbank on Saturday, 16 April. The boys from Lillidale are now a step closer to going to Spain by booking themselves a place in the National Finals to be held on the 09th July in Gauteng.

“This is the second time we are playing in the Danone Nations Cup,” said Team manger and Natural Science teacher, Caiphus Mtileni.  “Last year we didn’t even get to the Provincial Finals so I am so happy that, not only did we get there this year, but we are now through to the National Finals. The Danone Nations Cup is the highlight of our sports calendar, which I am sure it is for the majority of primary schools as it gives our youngsters an experience of a life time at such a young age. “

Explaining on his team performance Mtileni said: “I credit our success to my midfield.  I have two players that were particularly good.  In fact, our village has never produced a player that has gone on to compete in the PSL, but I think if trained correctly, there are a couple in my team with huge potential.”

Mhlahle Primary School was established in 1985 in the rural town of Lillidale where most of the youngsters come from single unemployed households that rely on child grants to survive.  The school currently has 700 learners and Mtileni believes that a trip to Spain for the youngsters would open their eyes to the world and would motivate then to strive harder to plot a life forward and then achieve their dreams.  “Our youngsters cannot even conceptualise what Spain is all about and a trip there would just broaden their minds to what else there is in the world.  That is why I am going to prepare the team well for the National Finals.”

“Our coach has a SAFA Level 0 certificate which qualifies him to teach youngsters of Under 12 age.  What will help us further is the fact that all the boys belong to one of the four Clubs in our village.  These coaches will give us a helping hand to train the players to peak on 9 July and hopefully lift the trophy.” said an excited Mtileni. Mpumalanga finished 6th in the 2010 Danone Nations Cup

North West also held their Provincial Finals on the same day with Nosizwe Primary School from Stillfontein in Dr Kenneth Kaunda Region beating Stellaland Primary School from Dr Ruth Mompati region 3 – 0.

Nosizwe Primary’s team Captain, Goodman Mosele, led by example and opened the scoring. The score line was increased by teammates Lonamile Kweqe and Phobsa Bila to clinch a win that won them a place in the National Finals.

Nosizwe and Mhlahle Primary Schools will join Kgwahlele Primary school from Limpopo in the Danone Nations Cup National Finals scheduled for Eldorado Park on 9 July.  The next Provincial Final will take place on 7 May in KwaZulu Natal and Northern Cape.

The winner of the National Final will get to go to Madrid, Spain, to compete in the Danone Nations Cup World Final, the biggest Under 12 tournament in the world.  There will be 40 nations competing.  South Africa is the only country to have won the tournament three times (2003, 2007 and 2009).  The tournament is based on four pillars: the values of the passion for the game, openness, accessibility and fair play.  These pillars are important to the development of the player as his passion for the game develops at this age. The concept was also established to encourage the youth of the world to live healthy lifestyles and pay attention to nutrition.

Mhlahle Primary School Wins the DNC Mpumalanga Provincial Finals

Mhlahle Primary School had to battle the rain as well as other local schools to win the Mpumalanaga provincial finals of the Danone Nations Cup at the Ackerville Stadium in Witbank. The weather was not ideal but the kids had fun all the same and enjoyed all the Danone snacks that they were given.

The kids had a hard time playing on a waterlogged field but they still had fun and in between games there were kids taking advantage of the break to play on the fields.

The tournament started off with all teams going up against each other. The top two teams then played each other in the finals. It so happened that the last game before the final had the two finalists playing against each other. In both cases Mhlahle primary beat Dumelani Primary. In the first game Mhlahle won comfortably but in the second game Dumelani put up a far better fight and actually dominated play. Even though Dumelani had more possession they really didn’t come close to scoring. Mhlahle first put the ball into into the net in the 13th min of the game only for the goal to be disallowed due to an infringement on the goal keeper. Then they actually scored in the 18th minute, just before half time. Considering the tournament up to that stage the result was correct. Mhlahle was the only unbeaten team in the tournament.

After the event, all the kids were given Ultra Mel, Nutriday and Yogi Sip to take home.

FREE STATE SCHOOLS BATTLE IT OUT TO REPRESENT THE REGION IN THE SANLAM KAY MOTSEPE SCHOOLS CUP PROVINCIAL FINALS!

All six Free State Regions will be staging their Sanlam Kay Motsepe Cup Regional Finals on the 07 May, to establish who will represent each region in the Provincial Finals on the 14 May at the Parys Sports Field.

A win for Harmony High School, a soccer academy representing Lejweleputswa Region, will put them into the Provincial Finals for the fifth year in succession. They have progressed to the National finals every time, being crowned champions in 2007, finishing in third place in 2008 and 2009 and second in 2010.

The Virginia team is currently at the top of their regional league and coach Pitso Mokoena said that it is not going to be an easy task for his team this year after four of their key players were snapped up by Mamelodi Sundowns and Bloemfontein Celtic at the end of last year, after having been spotted at the Sanlam Kay Motsepe Cup.

“I started at a slower pace this season as I have seven new players who need to get used to our systems and playing with the rest of the team,” said Mokoena. “I do not want to put pressure on the boys yet as I just want them to enjoy playing in the team.  We have a long way to go before the Provincial finals and I will step up the pace as we go along as I would like to improve on our second place finish last season.”

Meanwhile, Ntsu High School from Thabo Mofutsanyana Region is doing well so far this season, having comfortably won their four Regional matches so far. These third-time participants in the Sanlam Kay Motsepe Cup beat L K Ntelabathi Intermediate School 8 - 0, Witterburg Hoërskool 9-1, Thabo Thokoza Secondary School 6 - 2 and Moriting Wa Thuto High School 4 – 0, to book their place in the Regional Finals.

Team Coach, Michael Masooa, is pleased with his team’s success to date:  “We look at the Sanlam Kay Motsepe Schools Cup as the tournament we want to win every year.  We are now through to the Regional Finals and the boys are well organised and confident but the battle is not yet won and there is still a lot to be done in terms of mental and physical preparations. We are looking forward to the challenge and are pretty confident that we will make it to the National Finals for the fourth time.”

Three of Ntsu’s players joined PSL’s Free State Stars development academy six months ago, which has further helped the school on their road to success. “Joining Free State Stars is a great opportunity for me,” said midfielder, Nkululeko Jele. “Although I haven’t been there long, I have learnt a lot and I am hoping this knowledge will guide me and the rest of the team in the Regional Finals. I would like our team to do well and do the school proud.  I have enjoyed my time at school and would like to go down in the history of the school as a high achiever on the football field.

Jele adds with caution: “Although we have done well thus far I will not be complacent and will treat all opponents with respect as it is not over till we have the trophy in the cabinet. However, I do believe we have a better than average chance of getting into the National finals.”

17 year-old Jele cites teammates, right-wing Hadio Nhlapho and captain, Sethoa Mofokeng as key players: “Both players were with the team last year, they know the kind of challenges we will be facing so their advice is invaluable to the team.”

However, a school that has the potential to upstage all others and go all the way to the Finals is sports academy HTS Louis Botha from Bloemfontein (Motheo Region).

HTS Louis Botha was established in 1878 as a sports academy producing stars such as Alan Donald (Cricket), AJ Venter (Rugby) and Kagiso Kumbane (Olympic athlete). While the school has not been particularly strong in football, this situation is changing rapidly and 2011 is proving a very successful year already.

One of their key players is goalkeeper, Sizwe Ngoma. This youngster was contracted to Sundowns last year but the school the Club selected for the youngster this year is unable to provide the subjects he needs to study engineering so he was released from his contract, returning to HTS Louis Botha. This is a youngster with huge potential and he should become a Bafana player within the next couple of years.

The winning school gets R1 million, runners-up R700 000, third prize is R500 000 and the school finishing in fourth place receives R400 000. This prize money excludes the R100 000 that each Provincial winner gets. No prize money is handed over to the school in cash but is spent on legacy projects identified by each school. The schools that finish in first and second place in the Provincial Finals both go through to compete in the National Finals.

“The Sanlam Kay Motsepe Cup falls within our corporate social responsibility programme,” said Frank Louw, Sponsorship Manager, Sanlam Group Marketing. “While we see it as contributing to the development of South African football at school level, we also use the opportunity to reach as many youngsters as possible and promote healthy and productive lifestyles. This is a crucial age as youngsters are about to enter the vital post-school stage of their lives. We will be sending Sanlam representatives to as many games as possible guiding the players and fans on the importance of financial health and planning.”

Danone Nations Cup: North West and Mpumalanga Provincial finals kick-off on 16 April.

The search has begun!  Primary schools around the country have started competing in qualifiers to find the team that will represent South Africa in the Danone Nations Cup World Finals happening in Spain from 5 – 10 October with 40 participating countries.

Over 2 000 schools registered for participation in the 2011 Danone Nations Cup South Africa and this Saturday, 16 April, North West will host their Provincial Finals at the Ikageng Stadium in Potchefstroom while Lynville sports grounds in Witbank will host the Mpumalanga Provincial Final. Kickoff for both events is 09:00am.

According to Sandra Dorville, communications manager of Danone South Africa, Group Danone started the competition with the desire to act sustainably on behalf of children’s well-being and health. “Football as a universal sport is the perfect way to promote values like fair play, the pleasure of the game, team spirit, sharing -and above all- human values like openness, and respect,” she explains. “Since the tournament started in 2000 we have touched the lives of over 15 million people around the world.  Everyone that participates has the objective of reaching as many people as possible in that particular country.”

South Africa is now the country that has won the DNC more times than any other, and any team that embarks on the journey towards the National final will have big boots to walk in. One coach who has had experience in the tournament in previous years, Oupa Masela, of Stellaland Primary School - is not counting chickens just yet.

“This will be the fourth year that our school is taking part in the Danone Nations Cup,’ he says. “We’ve made it to the Provincials for two years now, and I hope we will be able to get to the Nationals and ultimately of course the boys would love to represent South Africa in the World Finals.”

The team from Vryburg in the North West province has faced an interesting challenge this year as Coach Masela was moved to a high school, leaving an opening for a new coach. But because no one could be found in time to take the reins for this year’s edition of the Danone Nations Cup - being a passionate coach that he is, Masela jumped in to help out.

“I have set up formations, lined up substitutions and given a pep talk - all over my cell phone,” laughs Masela, who, because of other commitments could not always be on the sidelines when his youngsters took to the pitch. The team still won their games, regardless of being coach-less. “But now they have my full focus. They have done very well so far and I want them to feel like they have all the support they need to be the Provincial champions.”

Phaphamani Primary School from Mpumalanga are the new kids in the Provincial line-up. The team has never participated in the Danone Nations Cup before, but the prospect of going overseas is very exciting to the young footballers, says team coach and manager, Fanie Nkosi.“Our young ones are very excited to have an opportunity to show their skills,” says Nkosi. “There are no tournament like this one for the younger footballers that does not compromise on the quality of play. So both the team and I are excited to see what will happen. Maybe we will open our eyes and find ourselves in Spain - if we play well, of course.”

Neil Tovey, ex Bafana Bafana and Kaizer Chiefs captain, will be following the tournament closely:  “I have been a part of the Danone Nations Cup for a few years now and I have a keen interest to see how the youth progress each year.  I have been attending a coaching course in Pretoria for the past week and it has been an eye opener as it has given me more insight into youth football development.  I can’t emphasise enough the importance of these kids just going out there and enjoying themselves.  This is not the age to be too competitive. Coaches must even make training sessions fun bringing in different elements where they kids can enjoy themselves as this is where they develop the passion for the sport. “

The National finals will take place at Eldorado Park on 11 June, an important date as it was that date in 2010 when the FIFA World Cup kicked-off in South Africa.

FREE STATE ACADEMY WINS THE COPA COCA-COLA 2011

Free State soccer academy, TS Louis Botha is the 2011 Copa Coca-Cola champion.  In an electrifying final that saw 4 goals scored the sports academy beat Sol Plaatjies from the North West 3 – 1 to lift the trophy. The action took place at the Galeshewe Stadium in Kimberley.

Sizwe Ngomo from HTS Louis Botha scored twice to make him the top goalscorer of the tournament with 6 goals in total.  Ngoma also took home the Player of the Tournament award.  Wandile Tjemolane scored the third goal for his school while Lehlohonolo Maruma scored for Sol Plaatjies who was runner up to Ngomo with 4 goals.

“Both teams were deserving finalists,” said Copa Coca-Cola ambassador, Lucas Radebe.  “They both have excellent players with a couple having had experience either internationally or with a PSL club which gives them that added advantage.”

On his overall experience in Kimberly Radebe commented: “I have had a tremendous time in Kimberley at Coca Coca-Cola.  I have watched most of the games and I can name at least two players that I believe we will see in our Under 20 and 23 national teams within the next year or so. These are humble beginnings for these boys and now they must be developed further. I believe our football development is taking shape now.”

Wesley Ledibane, captain of HTS Louis Botha was thrilled with his team’s success:  “Our plan was to defend and just gauge Sol Plaatjie, which we did.  The first 15 minutes of the game was hard for them and that’s when we got our opportunity to score our first two goals.  It was a gamble as our opponents looked deadly in the opening minutes of the game. They were always on the attack and it was fortunate that we scored our third goal which boosted our moral and gave the players confidence which wrapped up the final”

Ledibane’s career started at the age of 13 when his athletics coach saw his talent with the ball and decided he would do better in football.  He also plays for 2nd League team, Mangaung Academy.  His coach attributes his success as a captain to his leadership skills, a fighting character and he is a disciplined player. “As the team captain I believe it is important to know how to be neutral and be able to call everyone to order without taking sides,” said Ledibane.

Captain of runners-up, Lebogang Phethu from Sol Plaatjies, was happy to reach the finals and will go home a wiser player:  “We realized that there were three sports academies in the tournament so our approach was just to believe in ourselves and go out there and do our best.  We were very happy to be in the finals.  From a captains perspective it was about being disciplined and I was responsible to lead 10 other players on the field. From a personal perspective I have learnt a lot during Copa Coca-Cola which I know will help me become a better player.

2011 was Sol Plaatjies High School first experience in Copa Coca-Cola. “In our district in the North West we are the champions and getting to the final and all the exposure that comes with it has really motivated us.  I am proud to have been involved in this tournament and we might not have won but we have done our province proud as well.”

Earlier in the day Western Cape Sports School beat Benny’s Care Academy 3 – 0 to finish in third place.  Goals were scored by Diego Booysen, Taahir Ganga and Nathan Adams.

Sammy Mohlaoli, Coca-Cola Senior Communications Manager said of the final:  “It has been an exciting day of football and music.  Copa Coca-Cola falls within our active lifestyle strategy and today we had action of the field and after the final the crowd was entertained by Soul Candi DJ’s and there was a great deal of dancing giving them the opportunity to also get in some exercise. But the final was the main focus and Coca-Cola looks forward to seeing some of the players that competed in the 2011 Copa Coca-Cola going on to become South African hero’s and role models. “

HTS High School takes home R150 000, Sol Plaatjie R100 000 while Western Cape Sports School pocketed R60 000. This is over and above the R40 000 cash prize each team receives for being Provincial champions.

CLASH OF THE SOCCER ACADEMIES AT COPA COCA-COLA DAY 2

Copa Coca-Cola Under 18 action continued today, Friday 1 April, at the Galeshewe Stadium in Kimberley and it is now official:  It will be a Free State versus North West final tomorrow, Saturday 2 April, kick-off at 12pm.

The first semifinal clash was between two football academies with HTS Louis Botha from Bloemfontein in the Free State beating Benny Care’s Sports Academy from Limpopo 4 – 0.

HTS Louis Botha player, Sizwe Ngoma, is in line to take the top goalscorer award.  He has a total of 4 goals (2 goals scored against Freddy Sithole and 2 goals in the semifinals). “I am so happy to be here and to be performing well for my new school.  Last year I was in the Sundowns Development programme but the school they send us to this year does not have the subject that I need to be able to study engineering, so I had to leave and come back to my old school,” said Ngoma.

“This is our first tournament this year and I so want to do well to make my school and parents proud of me.  I learnt such a lot from Sundowns and I am using this knowledge to help my fellow players,” said Ngoma.

Coach, Norman Ditlhake, is excited his school is in the Final: “When people think of football academies in the Free State they always think of Harmony.  Copa Coca-Cola has put us firmly on the map as a top academy now and people will think of us.  We are looking forward to tomorrow when the SAFA coaches such as Pitso Mosimane will be attending as we want to show off our talented players.”

In the other semifinal Sol Plaatjies from the North West beat Western Cape Sports School    2 – 0 to make it to the final.   Sol Plaatjies striker, Lehlohonolo Marumo, is also vying for the top goalscorer award (scored 3 goals, 2 against Freddie Sithole and one in the semifinal):  “I am happy with my performance at this year’s Copa Coca-Cola.  One day I hope to be a striker for Bafana but I still have a long way to go.  I am very lucky in that I have had excellent grounding after being selected to attend the Sao Paulo Ole Academy in Brazil in 2009.  Last year I went for trials with Kaizer Chiefs, but they closed their academy. I was then successful at Platinum Stars however my parents did not allow me to go as they say I had to complete Grade 12 first. I was disappointed but I understand the importance of education.”

“I see Copa Coca-Cola as another chance to play competitive football which helps build the confidence I need when I play professional football.  I know that one day I will be a good player like Lucas Radebe – but as a striker!”

Sammy Mohlaoli, Coca-Cola Senior Communications Manager has been present at the tournament:  “The Kimberley fans are having a football feast!  Excellent action on the field and we have Lucas Radebe who has availed himself to take pictures with the fans flocked to the stadium. To complete the picture we have also added in a music element as sport and music are key passions of the South African youth and go hand in hand.  The Soul Candi performers will be keeping the fans dancing well after the games end.”

Mohlaoli goes on:  “But Copa Coca-Cola is about youth development - about balancing the pressures of professional sport with an active and meaningful lifestyle.  The teams that compete learn that there is much more to being a professional footballer than simply kicking the ball around really well, and those who adapt the best to this lifestyle and these challenges could easily catch the eye of talent scouts.  We have also brought in Lucas Radebe as our ambassador to enhance our message to the youth.”

HTS Louis Botha coach, Ditlhake has benefited from Radebe’s presence:  “When  we talk to our youngsters it is about self motivation, keeping focused, keeping healthy, eating properly, making sacrifices, living a healthy lifestyle and having Lucas Radebe here giving the same message to the kids means just so much more.  He has spent time with each team individually and I have noted the difference in the attitude of the players.”

The finals between HTS Louis Botha and Sol Plaatjies will take place tomorrow, Saturday 2 April at 12pm.  Prior to the final the third/fourth play off between the Western Cape Sports School  and Benny’s Care Sports Academy will kick-off at 10am.
