Sanlam Kay Motsepe Schools Cup launch match rescheduled as curtain raiser to the Sundowns vs Supersport United PSL game

It has been confirmed!  The launch match of the under-19 Sanlam Kay Motsepe Schools Cup between the reigning champions, Clapham High School and the 2012 champions, the School of Excellence, both from Gauteng, has been scheduled as the curtain raiser to the Sundowns vs. Supersport United PSL match at Loftus on Tuesday, 6 May.  The first game will take place on field B, kick-off at 5.30pm followed by the PSL game at 7.30pm.

Entrance to the curtain raiser is free and Sundowns is further offering the first 500 fans that arrive at the stadium between 4.30 and 5pm a ticket to the later derby match, but they must be dressed in Sundowns colours.

The tournament is co-funded by Sanlam, the Motsepe Foundation and the Sanlam Ubuntu-Botho Community Development Trust and managed by the South African Schools Football Association (SASFA) and the Department of Basic Education.

The Sanlam Kay Motsepe Schools Cup plays an invaluable role in the development of football in South Africa, providing organised, competitive competition for the schools involved. It also, through its prize money, makes a major contribution to community development.

This year, R3,4 million will be paid out to schools, with the proviso that they use the money to fund educational and community projects in their areas that will benefit the wider community on a long term basis.

The prize money increased dramatically when Sanlam came on board five years ago and in that time over R13.6 million has been used successfully to fund projects such as the drilling of boreholes, building of classrooms, administration blocks, gyms, soccer fields and other sports facilities, purchase of transport vehicles including busses and on the education side computers have been purchased, teaching aids and many more.

The winning school at the national final tournament will walk away with R1 million. The second, third and fourth placed schools will receive R600 000, R500 000 and R400 000 respectively. The nine provincial winners will each receive R100 000 for their efforts.

The highlight of the 10th anniversary of the tournament is likely to be the on-going rivalry between Clapham High School, the current champions, the School of Excellence and the most successful team in the history of the tournament, Harmony High School from Virginia in the Free State.

The Mamelodi Sundowns Development Academy players are schooled at Clapham, while The School of Excellence is a sports academy that has supplied many players to PSL, First division as well as second and third division clubs over the years.

Mamelodi Sundown’s Percy Tau was part of the Clapham team in 2013 and was named the player of the tournament. After successfully completing Grade 12 last year, he was incorporated into the Sundowns first team and so far has come in as a substitute in for matches and has scored 2 goals.

The tournament is named in memory of Kay Motsepe, the mother of prominent businessman Patrice Motsepe. The aim of the tournament is to contribute to the development of South African soccer and to nurture future soccer stars. It strives to unite the country’s youth through the shared love of the game and to promote football excellence.

Johan van Zyl, Group CEO of Sanlam says the company understands the value of development and the opportunity it gives youngsters to achieve what they hope for. “We believe that the Sanlam Kay Motsepe Schools Cup creates opportunities that have a positive impact on the youth, and that the tournament provides exposure to professional scouts for talented players,” he said.  “Importantly, it also contributes to enhanced learning through improved educational facilities for the benefit of the rest of the pupils in the participating schools and for the benefit of the broader community.”

Kenneth Makhanya, a representative of the Motsepe Foundation and Ubuntu Botho Trusts, said the Motsepe Foundation endorses the objectives and rationale behind the sponsorship. “Our president, Mr Patrice Motsepe, initiated the Sanlam Kay Motsepe Cup in memory of his mother and to recognize the integral role she played in his life – encouraging him through school, then university and helping him through the dark times as well. This is what we want for the South African youth. Sanlam share that vision and it has created an ideal partnership.”

The tournament is organised by the South African Schools Football Association (Safsa). Their president, Mandla Mazibuko, said they are very grateful to Sanlam and Mr. Motsepe for their generosity. “Through this tournament we are able to educate learners through the medium of sport, and to ensure the future of the game,” he said.

FREE STATE SCHOOLS BATTLE IT OUT TO REPRESENT THE REGION IN THE SANLAM KAY MOTSEPE SCHOOLS CUP PROVINCIAL FINALS!

All six Free State Regions will be staging their Sanlam Kay Motsepe Cup Regional Finals on the 07 May, to establish who will represent each region in the Provincial Finals on the 14 May at the Parys Sports Field.

A win for Harmony High School, a soccer academy representing Lejweleputswa Region, will put them into the Provincial Finals for the fifth year in succession. They have progressed to the National finals every time, being crowned champions in 2007, finishing in third place in 2008 and 2009 and second in 2010.

The Virginia team is currently at the top of their regional league and coach Pitso Mokoena said that it is not going to be an easy task for his team this year after four of their key players were snapped up by Mamelodi Sundowns and Bloemfontein Celtic at the end of last year, after having been spotted at the Sanlam Kay Motsepe Cup.

“I started at a slower pace this season as I have seven new players who need to get used to our systems and playing with the rest of the team,” said Mokoena. “I do not want to put pressure on the boys yet as I just want them to enjoy playing in the team.  We have a long way to go before the Provincial finals and I will step up the pace as we go along as I would like to improve on our second place finish last season.”

Meanwhile, Ntsu High School from Thabo Mofutsanyana Region is doing well so far this season, having comfortably won their four Regional matches so far. These third-time participants in the Sanlam Kay Motsepe Cup beat L K Ntelabathi Intermediate School 8 - 0, Witterburg Hoërskool 9-1, Thabo Thokoza Secondary School 6 - 2 and Moriting Wa Thuto High School 4 – 0, to book their place in the Regional Finals.

Team Coach, Michael Masooa, is pleased with his team’s success to date:  “We look at the Sanlam Kay Motsepe Schools Cup as the tournament we want to win every year.  We are now through to the Regional Finals and the boys are well organised and confident but the battle is not yet won and there is still a lot to be done in terms of mental and physical preparations. We are looking forward to the challenge and are pretty confident that we will make it to the National Finals for the fourth time.”

Three of Ntsu’s players joined PSL’s Free State Stars development academy six months ago, which has further helped the school on their road to success. “Joining Free State Stars is a great opportunity for me,” said midfielder, Nkululeko Jele. “Although I haven’t been there long, I have learnt a lot and I am hoping this knowledge will guide me and the rest of the team in the Regional Finals. I would like our team to do well and do the school proud.  I have enjoyed my time at school and would like to go down in the history of the school as a high achiever on the football field.

Jele adds with caution: “Although we have done well thus far I will not be complacent and will treat all opponents with respect as it is not over till we have the trophy in the cabinet. However, I do believe we have a better than average chance of getting into the National finals.”

17 year-old Jele cites teammates, right-wing Hadio Nhlapho and captain, Sethoa Mofokeng as key players: “Both players were with the team last year, they know the kind of challenges we will be facing so their advice is invaluable to the team.”

However, a school that has the potential to upstage all others and go all the way to the Finals is sports academy HTS Louis Botha from Bloemfontein (Motheo Region).

HTS Louis Botha was established in 1878 as a sports academy producing stars such as Alan Donald (Cricket), AJ Venter (Rugby) and Kagiso Kumbane (Olympic athlete). While the school has not been particularly strong in football, this situation is changing rapidly and 2011 is proving a very successful year already.

One of their key players is goalkeeper, Sizwe Ngoma. This youngster was contracted to Sundowns last year but the school the Club selected for the youngster this year is unable to provide the subjects he needs to study engineering so he was released from his contract, returning to HTS Louis Botha. This is a youngster with huge potential and he should become a Bafana player within the next couple of years.

The winning school gets R1 million, runners-up R700 000, third prize is R500 000 and the school finishing in fourth place receives R400 000. This prize money excludes the R100 000 that each Provincial winner gets. No prize money is handed over to the school in cash but is spent on legacy projects identified by each school. The schools that finish in first and second place in the Provincial Finals both go through to compete in the National Finals.

“The Sanlam Kay Motsepe Cup falls within our corporate social responsibility programme,” said Frank Louw, Sponsorship Manager, Sanlam Group Marketing. “While we see it as contributing to the development of South African football at school level, we also use the opportunity to reach as many youngsters as possible and promote healthy and productive lifestyles. This is a crucial age as youngsters are about to enter the vital post-school stage of their lives. We will be sending Sanlam representatives to as many games as possible guiding the players and fans on the importance of financial health and planning.”

COPA COCA-COLA FOOTBALL REGIONAL FINALS KICK-OFF

The Copa Coca-Cola soccer tournament is now well underway with six Regions hosting games this past weekend, 19 February 2011. Hillview High School hosted the Tshwane West finals with winners, Central High school, boosted by the inclusion of Sundowns FC development players who are students at the school, booking a berth in the Gauteng Provincial Finals scheduled for KwaThema Sports Stadium on Saturday, 5th March, kick-off at 9am.

Central High School was unbeatable and also took home the individual awards: Top Goal Scorer and Best Player, as a result of striker, Khanyelihle Shozi scoring six goals in total.

Ten schools participated in the tournament which was divided into two pools and played on a knockout basis. Central’s’ first game against Winterveld High School resulted in a 10 – 0 drubbing. Central then went on to beat host, Hillview, 3 – 0 to book their place in the final against Rantailane High School, which they won 10 – 0.

Shozi could not contain his excitement on his team’s success: “We came to the finals with the aim of winning and proceeding to the next stage of Copa Coca-Cola. Our coach, Chaya Peter, inspired us to have fun and believe in ourselves.  He told us before the tournament that we could win by 10 goals, which we did - twice. It was awesome.”

The young player, who started his career at Mabhuti Khanyeza’s club, Rockers FC in 2002 and was recruited into the Sundowns development programme in June 2010.

“The Copa Coca-Cola competition is a great stepping stone for us as young players,” said Shozi. “It is not just one weekend of games, but we play for months, which gives us the opportunity to polish our skills. My favourite player is Christiano Ronaldo, and I aspire to play for Real Madrid one day.”

Coach Chaya Peter was also pleased with his team’s result: “This was a great start to a magnificent tournament. Copa Coca-Cola is definitely an inspiring initiative especially following the Minister of Sports and Recreation’s call for all South Africans to rally around school football. Copa Coca-Cola gives all schools something exciting to look forward to. It is an established tournament and teachers and coaches know that it is for the under 18 ages so we can start building our squads early.  In our case, we started training last year already.”

“Coca-Cola is proud to play a part in developing young talent,” said Anthony Garstang, Brand Experience Manager, Coca-Cola South Africa. “The tournament is well underway now and as a brand, we are obviously looking to build talent for the future, recognising the important part the fans play in building the sport. We have decided to give a free 300ml Coke to everyone who comes to watch games. There also will be a DJ at the games throughout the day. We want the community in all the regions to come and see the future football stars in action.”
