It's Gauteng against KwaZulu-Natal in the Kay Motsepe Schools Cup final

2013 champions, Clapham High School will play Sukuma Secondary School from KZN in the under-19 Kay Motsepe Schools Cup national final match on Saturday, 10 October, at the Nike Centre, Soweto, kick-off at 12.30pm.

Sukuma came into the national finals as the dark horses having registered to participate in the tournament for the first time this year. They finished in third spot in Group A and went through to the quarters as one of the lucky losers.  The school then beat HTS Louis Botha in the quarterfinals and Groblershoop from the Northern Cape in the semi-finals.

Clapham meanwhile has not lost a single match at the national finals, drawing one game against Dr Reginald Cingo from the Free State to finish top of Group A.  They played the same school in the quarterfinals managing to defeat them 2 – 0 this time.  The match of the day was the semi-final between Clapham and the SAFA Transnet School of Excellence which Clapham won on penalties.

The third/fourth playoff between the School of Excellence and Groblershoop will kick-off at 10 am tomorrow, Saturday.  This will be followed by a live performance by Mafikizolo and Jankie and the final will kick-off at 12.30pm.  In attendance will be acclaimed businessman, Mr Patrice Motsepe and a couple of ANC ministers.

Clapham will go into the finals as favourites, having won the tournament before (2013) and boosted by the Mamelodi Sundowns development players.  Head coach, Pitso Mosimane, visited the boys to give them a motivational talk and offer encouragement.  But there are no guarantees in football and at the end of the day it is the school that scores the most goals that will win.

Clapham also has in its favour a strong strike force.  Keletso Makgalwa is currently the highest goals corer having netted six times.  Ray-Shaun Modise from Groblershoop is lying second on the table with 5 goals.  Tomorrow will determine who the trophy will go to.

No matter what the outcome tomorrow, all four schools have won money. But how this will be split is still to be determined.  First prize is R1 million, Second, third and fourth prizes are R600 000, R500 000 and R400 000 respectively

Grey College Represent Knights In Coca-Cola® T20 Schools Challenge National Finals

The first school to qualify for the 2014 Coca-Cola® Schools T20 Challenge national finals is Bloemfontein’s Grey College, who beat their own 2nd team in the Free State provincial final and then overcame the Griquas provincial champions, Hoërskool Noord-Kaap, in the Knights franchise final.

The Coca-Cola® T20 Schools Challenge is a national T20 knockout competition which began back in October last year, involving 650 schools.  The schools played in provincial competitions initially, with the eventual provincial winners meeting their counterparts in the various franchises – The Cobras, Warriors, Dolphins, Knights, Lions and Titans.

The tournament is fairly new, but it is already playing its part in Cricket South Africa’s talent identification pipeline. Quinton de Kock is the first Protea player to have played in the national finals – for King Edward II School and the Lions in 2010 and 2010 – and a number of players have gone on from here to play for the South African Schools and  Coca-Cola®  under-19 teams. They include the star of the 2014 ICC under-19 World Cup, Kagiso Rabada, who represented St Stithians College and the Lions in 2013.

The Free State final was an unusual affair – the first time that two teams from the same school have met in a final in this competition, which is testament to the depth of cricketing talent at the Bloemfontein school.

According to Andre Bester, master in charge of cricket at Grey and 1st team coach, the boys thoroughly enjoyed playing against each other. “In fact, they were even more competitive knowing that they were playing against their school mates,” he said. “The atmosphere was great for the boys, the school and all those that attended the final.”

“However, for me as the 1st team coach and the master in charge of cricket, it was very difficult because naturally I could not choose sides and wanted both to win. There was a lot of chirping on the field, and a great overall Grey College spirit,” said Bester. “Although it was inevitable that one of the teams had to win, it is still fantastic to know that both our 1st and 2nd teams are the best cricket sides in the Free State “

As Free State champions, Grey then went on to play Noord-Kaap, the winners of the Griquas region, to determine who the representative of the Knights franchise at the national finals would be.

The Bloemfontein side won quite comfortably (by 9 wickets) and is set to challenge their counterparts from around the country at the Coca-Cola® T20 Schools Challenge national finals in Pretoria next month.

As franchise champions, Grey College win R66 000 in prize money and, according to Bester, they are going to use it for cricket maintenance purposes: fixing the cricket nets, and buying some new equipment. This prize money could increase to R110 000 if the school emerges as the ultimate tournament winner.

Scores:
Provincial final – Grey I 167/2 (Frik de Beer 85 runs off 50 balls). Grey II 129/4. Grey I won by 38 runs.
Franchise final - Noord-Kaap 81 all out. Grey College 82/1. Grey won by 9 wickets.

The Golden Lions and Western Province face each other in the final game of the 2013 Coca-Cola Under 18 Craven Week

The Golden Lions will meet Western Province in the unofficial final of the 50th Coca-Cola Craven Week on Saturday.
They earned that right after winning their opening two games at the festival. The Lions scraped home by a single point against Free State on Thursday, while Province were comfortable, 30-6 winners over the Blue Bulls in their second game, on Wednesday.
It took an injury-time penalty to separate the sides when the Golden Lions and Free State met on Thursday. The game was a thriller, with the lead changing hands twice and nothing to separate the sides.
SWD turned it on to beat Easter Province comfortably, 40-14, while both the Valke and the Griffons had good wins.
There are only four sides that have won both games so far – Zimbabwe and Border join WP and the Lions – showing how evenly matched the sides are this year.
Zimbabwe have had their best week in years and, as a reward, the organisers have slotted their annual “international” against Namibia in on the main field on Saturday.
Free State and the Pumas – who both won one and lost one game, play in the main curtain-raiser.
This is the third year in a row that the Lions are playing in the main game at the Coca-Cola Craven Week.
Saturday’s Fixtures
C Field – 8.45am Border CD v Griquas, 10.15pm Griquas Country v Leopards
B Field – 8.45am Limpopo Blue Bulls v EP Country, 10.15am Griffons v Boland, 11.45am E Province v Valke.

SANLAM KAY MOTSEPE SCHOOLS CUP GAUTENG PROVINCIAL FINALS IN SOWETO ON SATURDAY

Gauteng will host the eighth Sanlam Kay Motsepe Schools Cup provincial finals on Saturday August 25 at the Nike Football Training Centre in Soweto
The winning school will get R100 000 in prize money which will be used to fund legacy projects identified by the school.

The participating schools are: Seanamarena Secondary School ( Mapetla-Soweto),Tiisetsong Secondary School ( Thokoza), Jabulile Secondary School (Orange Farm), Highlands North Boys' High School (Bramley), Jet Nteo Secondary School ( Boipatong- Vanderbijlpark), Khanya Lesedi High (Ratanda-Heidelberg), Rosina Sedibane-Modiba Sports School (Laudium) and the Transnet Sports School of Excellence( Elandsfontein).
Thabo Mokwena from Tiisetsong Secondary School is looking forward to the event. The grade 12 pupil will captain his school team on Saturday in their debut appearance in the provincial finals, with the hope of claiming the title.

“This is an opportunity of a lifetime!" Mokwena says. "The Sanlam Kay Motsepe Schools Cup is by far the biggest competition at school level and I am really glad my school qualified for the provincial finals.  I will never forget taking part in this tournament; this is such an honour for me. I am currently in matric and winning this tournament means everything to me as I would like to be remembered at the school after I have left."
Tiisetsong are relative newcomers to the competition. They took part for the first time in 2011, but were eliminated at the regional finals of the competition by the eventual 2011 champions, Johannesburg Secondary School.

Buti Mofokeng, coach of Tiisetsong Secondary, believes they can go further in the competition. “We set goals as a team at the beginning of this year and one of the objectives was to get the Sanlam Kay Motsepe Schools Cup silverware into our cabinet.”
Tiisetsong’s strongest competition is more than likely going to come from Transnet School of Excellence, Rosina Sediban-Modiba Sports School and 2010 provincial champions Jet Nteo Secondary School.

The school that finishes in first place on Saturday, as well as the runner-up will go on to represent the Gauteng province at the National Finals of the competition to be held in Bloemfontein from 2 to 6 October.

SPECIAL SCHOOL BENEFITS FROM FIRST EXPERIENCE IN DANONE NATIONS CUP

Tsosoloso Special School might not have won the Gauteng Danone Nations Cup Provincial Finals that took place at the Central Grounds in  Mamelodi today, but the teachers used the experience gained from competing in a tournament of this magnitude as an exercise to help build the youngsters confidence.  Tsosoloso won one of their three scheduled games beating Roosevelt Primary School 1 – 0.  The tournament was ultimately won by Sonqoba Primary School who beat defending champions, Sapebuso Primary 3 – 1 on penalties after the game levelled at 1-all after regulation time.  Sonqoba will now represent Gauteng Province in the National Finals.  The ultimate winner will compete in the 40-Nationa World Final in Warsaw, Poland in September.

Tsosoloso, Situated in at the Father Simangaliso Mkhatshwa  Welfare Complex in Soshanguve, is a safe haven for orphaned, abandoned and abused children.  The school has been in operation since 1987 and cares for 350 kids, ranging from 3 to 16 years old,  referred to the school by Social Workers, the South African Police Services (SAPS) and neighbouring schools.

Explains coach, Mohapi Nkutshoeu as to the reason he has been eying the Danone Nations Cup for a couple of years now.  “Every child in the schools comes from a challenging situation meaning that they all have psychological issues, the main being lack of trust, confidence and aggression.  Sport is a means of getting kids active and is a place they can feel safe.  We also use sport, soccer in particular, to teach the kids family values.  When you play in a team you have to trust your team mates.  I tell them that they are playing as a family.”

Mkhatshwa has been at the school since2009.  “I was a member of a group that came to the school as psychologists to talk to the children.  I then joined the school full time where I continue to build the children and am now one of the sports teachers”.

The school is a multi cultural facility and has helped thousands of children grow into fine members of society.  The school relies solely on Government funding to survive and there is not enough to service the sports facilities which are challenging.  “But we manage with what we have and all the players love to just get out onto the field and play,” said Nkutshoeu.

Harmony High School and Dr R. Cingo Comprehensive School from the Free State as well as Rosina Sedibane Sports School and Johannesburg High School from Gauteng are through to the quarterfinals of the Sanlam Kay Motsepe Schools Cup happening in Bloemfontein.   The teams from KwaZulu Natal are Embizeni High School and Cabangokuhle High School.

In accordance to the rules of the competition the teams that finish the League in positions one and two in each Group qualify for the quarterfinals.  As there are three groups, of the three teams in third place, the two with the highest points also qualify.  Ncedo (Eastern Cape) and Embizeni (KwaZulu-Natal) therefore make up the final two teams.

Rosina Sedibane topped Group A after winning all their games today but did not manage to get maximum points as they were beaten 3 – 1 by Harmony, the team that finished in second place, yesterday.  Harmony on the other hand did not lose a game but draw against Rietvale and Jojo to put them a point behind Rosina

The surprise of the day came school from a small rural village, Emsinga in KwaZulu-Natal who surprised everyone with their gutsy play and determination to do well.  Emizeni High School had the fans from Bloemfontein, as well as fellow competitors, on their feet when they beat the Johannesburg Secondary School 1 – 0 to put them in second place in Group C, behind the mighty team from Gauteng that has 10 Orlando Pirates development players.

Emizeni team manager was pleased with the team’s performance:  “We did not do well in the Provincial finals and were beaten by Cabangokuhle.  When we got home we started training three times a day to get our game plan perfect and this paid off.  I am looking forward to tomorrow and will hopefully finish high up and earn money for the school.”

In Group B Cabangokuhle High School from KwaZulu-Natal finished on top with Pabalelo from the Northern Cape in second place.

The play-offs will take place on Friday, 15 July at Clive Solomon Stadium.  Arriving will the some of the Sundowns management include Daniel Mudau.  The fans has also had fun in the Sanlam marquee where they have been entertained by the Takalani Sesame puppets and parents visited the wellness centre to have their blood pressure checked as well as cholesterol.
