South African Football Legend and African Cup of Nation Winner - Neil Tovey  Talks about how he created an academy in South Africa in the 90s that produces players like Steven Pienaar who played for  Ajax Cape Town, Ajax, Borussia Dortmund, Everton, Tottenham Hotspur and Sunderland. Steven is now an international ambassador for Everton.  He covers aspects like the definition of an academy, child safety act, basic requirements to start an academy, equipment, communication, scouting, Agents, education, etc...

IWC chats to Neil Tovey about Setting up an Academy

 



South African sporting icon, Neil Tovey will be the latest guest in the next Intune With Coaching live webinar series edition, aimed at providing functional insight on what goes into setting up a sports academy, coaching clinic, and programme, with the focus primarily on football.

This episode follows an interview with the Department of Basic Education’s Bongani Zondi around the regulations for the resumption of school sports, and the presentation given by Intune Communication and Entertainment Founder, Kassey Belluigi regarding the importance of building a brand as a coach.


Tovey, an ex-Bafana Bafana captain, led the nation to our only Africa Cup of Nations trophy which culminated with the famous two-nil triumph in the final against Tunisia in 1996, with former president Nelson Mandela working his Madiba magic at the stadium and across the nation.


Following an illustrious career that spanned nearly 20 years, where he represented Durban City, AmaZulu and Kaizer Chiefs for a combined 632 times while notching up 52 caps for the national team, the former central defender also took up coaching. He completed his UEFA A licence with a record 90% pass rate on his way to coaching in and winning the Rothmans Cup, Telkom Charity Cup, and the COSAFA Cup with Banyana Banyana.


Long before serving as the SAFA Technical Director between 2015-2020, Tovey also played an integral part in the forming of the Transnet School of Excellence in 1994, an academy that has since produced elite international and local stars such as Steven Pienaar and Bernard parker.

 During the QnA with host and Intune Communications and Entertainment Director, Shawn Belluigi, Tovey will be discussing the tools one needs to get an academy or clinic off the ground.

 This will include the approvals and policies required; the inclusion of education; scouting and recruitment; standard of coaching; coaching programmes; sponsorship; the possible challenges, including the impact of COVID-19, and much more.

 There will also be time set aside for the audience to pose their questions to Mr Tovey, to provide full value to the coaches and administrators.

 Ahead of the webinar, Belluigi confirmed the idea behind bringing in the stalwart and the choice of the topic: “The restrictions that were imposed due to the coronavirus have been lifted and now it is time to get back to playing school sport. Neil will help coaches setup their academies and coaching structures so we can get back to playing sport as soon as possible.

 “I cannot wait until we can spend our weekends watching our kids play their sport of choice and Neil will give us the tools to do it as quickly as possible, that’s what makes this episode so exciting.” he added.

KFC and Cricket South Africa launch 5th KFC Mini-Cricket Kids vs Proteas Tour





The 5th Edition of the KFC Mini-Cricket Kids vs Proteas Tour is set to kick-off this summer and will see the Proteas being pitted against three KFC Mini-Cricket teams across the country.
In the 2016/17 season the three all-star KFC Mini-Cricket assistant coaches; Graeme Smith, Neil McKenzie and Mfuneko Ngam, led the schools that won opportunities to play against the Proteas to a 2-all series tie.
Former Proteas Captain Graeme Smith believes that this year the KFC Mini-Cricket team will build on the success of the previous season in getting one up on the Proteas. “In the previous instalment of the KFC Mini-Cricket Kids vs Proteas Tour, the team closed out a tightly contested match and managed to draw the series,” said Smith.
Proteas bating all-rounder, Farhaan Behardien, hinted that there’s great excitement within the Proteas camp for yet another opportunity to play against the KFC Mini-Cricket team. 
“With every KFC Mini-Cricket Kids vs Proteas Tour, there has been great improvement on some of the talent on display. This really pays homage to the KFC Mini-Cricket programme as an inspirational grassroot initiative,” said Behardien. 
KFC Mini-Cricket has grown into one of the leading grassroot programmes in South Africa. In the previous season, the programme saw a staggering 120 000 kids from over 5078 schools across South Africa taking part in over 22 000 cricket matches in the 2016/17 season.
KFC Public Affairs Director, Thabisa Mkhwanazi said, “Every season has been bigger and better than the previous, and this time around it won’t be any different. With the launch of the 5th season of the KFC Mini-Cricket Kids vs Proteas Tour, we encourage teams to enter and stand a chance to play against our cricketing heroes.”
Cricket South Africa GM: Cricket, Corrie van Zyl, explained that the value of KFC Mini-Cricket lies in the programme being the first taste of organised cricket that aspirant young boys and girls are introduced to. “In their journey of learning the disciplines of cricket, the kids develop self-confidence and learn about the values of building friendships,” added Van Zyl.
“KFC continues to be a supporter of cricket in South Africa and we remain fully committed to giving kids, coaches and all involved the opportunity to develop and upskill themselves through the KFC Mini-Cricket programme and the KFC Mini-Cricket Kids vs Proteas Tour,” he concluded.
KFC runs a nationwide competition to select their teams whereby the three entering schools will be drawn and will be given the chance to pit their KFC Mini-Cricket teams against the mighty Proteas.

For the fifth year KFC will run a national competition where KFC Mini-Cricket kids will stand the chance to play against the Proteas in the KFC Mini-Cricket Kids vs Proteas Tour.

LAUNCH OF THE SPORTS LEGACY EXHIBITION: from freedom to fanfare, celebrating South Africa’s legacy as a sporting host



Since its readmission to world sport, South Africa has successfully staged a number of high profile international sporting events, including the World Cups of rugby, cricket and football.

In celebration of those and other achievements, and to display to the public just how notable they were, the exhibition “From Freedom to Fanfare, celebrating South Africa’s legacy as a sporting host”, sponsored by the Lotto, has been launched, and it will be on display for people to celebrate South Africa as a successful sporting host since 1994 for the next five months.

The exhibition, which is informative and interactive, and therefore great fun for the whole family, is on display at the FNB Stadium in Johannesburg and incorporates 13 sports and 29 events.

The exhibition has been years in the planning. The original concept was the brainchild of the late Leepile Taunyane. He had a dream that was to establish a South African Football Museum highlighting the history of SA football.

Sadly, he died in 2013 and he did not live to fulfill his dream, so the project was put on hold.
That was until his son, also Leepile Taunyane, took it up on behalf of his father and joined forces with project custodian Pippa Freer, the ex­ Orlando Pirates marketing manager. She has put together many sports projects and has worked with a number of government departments.

Leepile is an engineer by profession, but growing up in the massive presence of his beloved father, he could not but get to love football. Although he never played the sport at a high level, the game was an ever ­present factor in the household.

The project evolved under Leepile’s direction from a football museum to a multi­code concept, as other sporting codes asked to be involved. It is now a celebration of South Africa as a sporting host in general.

It is, of course, impossible to include all the highly successful events that have been hosted, so it was decided to include those events and sporting codes that made a big impact within all communities in SA. The success of the event in the eyes of the fans is what determined what would be included.

The exhibition will be open on request for group bookings and the cost of the entrance will be determined by the nature of the group request. For example, the group might want to also have a tour of the FNB Stadium, or it may require refreshments.

The exhibition is available for hospitality at big match or event days.  It is also a fun venue for launches.

There will also be special offers for large groups and for scholars.   

As President Nelson Mandela said: ‘ Sport has the power to change the world. It has the power to inspire. It has the power to unite people in a way that little else does. It speaks to youth in a language they understand. Sport can create hope where once there was only despair. It is more powerful than government in breaking down racial barriers.’

Leepile Taunyane (1928 - 2013).
·        Leepile Taunyane was born on 14 December 1928 in Alexandra.
·        He served the game of football in many capacities, within SAFA, where he was eventually a vice-president, and he was an honorary presedent of the Premier Soccer League.
·        Taunyane began his career as a soccer administrator in Alexandra in the 1960s, when he mentored a young Irvin Khoza, the current chairman of the PSL.
·        The former school teacher had served in various leadership roles since the 1970s, including the presidency of the Transvaal Football Association (1974 to 1985), the Alexandra Football Association (1959 to 1980) and vice-president of SAFA (1978 to 1985).
