Ekurhuleni school to represent Gauteng Province at the Danone Nations Cup national finals

Zamukhanya Primary School from Daveyton, Ekurhuleni, beat St Joseph’s Kulani 1 – 0 in a nail-biting under-12 Danone Nations Cup provincial final match this weekend, which has earned them a spot in the national finals taking place at the Dobsonville Stadium, Soweto, on Saturday, 15th September.

“I am overwhelmed as this was not expected’” said an excited coach, Sibonelo Mfeka.  “Our first Danone Nations Cup experience and we have reached the national finals.   I am humbled, and it proves that dreams come true.  It doesn’t matter from where one comes, whether from the dusty streets in the rural areas or the more affluent urban area, anyone can win you just need to have faith and determination.”

The winning strategy, believes the coach, was mental preparation and being able to identify talent and position that talent correctly.  “The challenge is that I have no coaching qualification.  I played soccer at primary school only and I coach the boys according to my personal knowledge of the game.  I teach them the basics.  My talent is being able to pick good players and I allow them to go out and just play the game and then I encourage them and build their confidence.  I tell them that the game is seven against seven and to go out and just enjoy the game. This proved a good strategy as the provincials were not easy.  The teams were good and there were plenty of spectators which was a bit daunting, but the boy’s confidence was so strong that they didn’t let anything phase them.”

The next step is the national finals at the Dobsonville Stadium.  “I am not going to make any changes to either the team or our training regime,” said Mfeka.  “However, I might include more practise sessions.  I am not going to promise we are going to win the nationals, but we will go well prepared and use it as a learning experience.”

Nutrition will also play a key role in preparations.  “The players come from poor families and we have a feeding scheme at the school, and so I am comfortable that they will get enough nutrition to build them up for the nationals.”

Zamukhanya’s first provincial final match against St David’s Marist was tough as their opponents were strong and determined.  Despite the game being played in St David’s half most of time, they failed to capitalise, and the game ended with no score giving each team a point.

Their next game was against an experienced Sunnyside Primary from Pretoria, who have competed in the numerous provincial finals. The newcomers were not phased by experience and went on to beat them 2 – 0.  They then beat Sicelo Primary 1 – 0 to top the log meeting St Joseph’s Kulani in the final match.  It was a tough game with both teams evenly matched.  It could have gone either way with both schools failing to score after numerous shots at goal.  Zamukhanya finally managed to put the ball in the net to win 1 – 0.

The national finals will see the nine provincial winners compete for the title and a chance to represent South Africa at the world finals scheduled for Barcelona, Spain, in 2019.  Entrance to the Dobsonville Stadium on 15th September is free and, not only can the fans watch first class under-12 soccer, but there will be fun for the whole family in the form of skill testing games, target shooting, jumping castles, face painting and much more.

Danone Nations Cup provincial final dates released

The dates for the provincial final tournaments in the South African leg of the world’s biggest under-12 soccer tournament – the Danone Nations Cup - have been announced.

Group Danone, the tournament sponsors, will be celebrating their centenary in 2019 and it’s been announced that the 2018 World Finals, at which the champions from all the competing nations participate, will be held next year together with the 2019 tournament in Spain, where Danone was first established 100 years ago.

This means that the South African Schools Football Association (SASFA), who organise the competition here, have more time to stage their provincial tournaments this year because they don’t have to be finished by early July to begin applying for passports and visas.

SASFA are happy with the extra time as this gives them more time to get registrations in and they want their coordinators to go deep into the rural areas to entice schools to compete.

“The Danone Nation Cup is a key tournament on the SASFA calendar and the prize of an overseas trip to compete in the world finals makes it a popular one,” said SASFA’s tournament director Themba Tshabalala. “This year we are making an extra effort to grow the number of participating schools as we have a lot more time.”

The tournament plays a critical role in childhood development for 12-year-olds as it gives them something to strive for, Tshabalala said. “It is also used by educators as a means of teaching life skills –goal-setting, teamwork, perseverance, and the value of hard work. “An important added benefit is that there is an emphasis on teaching kids how to develop healthy eating habits which will benefit them throughout their lives.”

The Northern Cape province will kick-start the provincial finals on 14th April with Upington the host town again. Final registrations are still coming in, but it’s expected that more than 130 schools will register, and they will begin their cluster level games in the first week of March. Bankhara Bodulong Primary School represented the province at last year’s national finals, and they already have their entry in for this year’s competition.

South Africa has been competing in the Danone Nations Cup since its inception in 2000 and is one of only 2 countries that has won the tournament 3 times (2003,2007 and 2009). The other country being France.

The dates and venues of the 2018 Provincial Finals are:

·  Northern Cape: April 14 (Upington)
·  Free State: May 5 (Bloemfontein)
·  North West: May 19 (Klerksdorp)
·  Limpopo: June 2 (Polokwane)
·  Mpumalanga: June 9 (Secunda)
·  KwaZulu-Natal: July 28 (Pinetown)
·  Eastern Cape: August 4 (East London)
·  Western Cape: August 11 (Cape Town)
·  Gauteng: August 25 (Reiger Park).

The National Finals will be in Gauteng on 15th September, at a venue still to be announced.

Schools can still register for the competition by contacting the national coordinator at the SA Schools Football Association (SASFA), Themba Tshabalala, on 011 403 2844, 084 290 0602 or 072 588 4957. Alternatively, they can visit the Danone Nations Cup South Africa Facebook page or go to www.facebook.com/dncsouthafrica to download the necessary documents. KwaZulu-Natal Danone Nations Cup Provincial Finals get underway on Saturday

The next round of Danone Nations Cup provincial finals take place at Durban’s Sugar Ray Xulu Stadium on Saturday, 20th May when the winners of the 12 KwaZulu-Natal districts battle it out for the provincial title and a chance to compete in the national finals.

Pinetown will be represented for the third time by Mophela Primary School. In 2015 they were provincial champions and went through to Gauteng to the nationals and last year they were beaten by Mthethomusha Primary School in the provincial final.

Sydney Mkhize, the team’s coach and manager, gives credit to his principal, Mr Ntsele who is a firm believer that children should take part in sporting activities because it helps them relax and have fun and teaches them discipline. “He made it possible for us to enter and encouraged us all the way,” Mkhize said.

Mophela came into the competition with an all-new team this year, Mkhize explains, there were 40 kids who came to trials this year so it was quite a task cutting it down to the required number of 12.

Mkhize has a level 1 coaching qualification from SAFA. He grew up playing soccer and made the Amazulu reserve team back in 1997, when he didn’t make it into the professional team, he decided to give up playing become a teacher.

The team is taking preparations for the provincial finals very seriously. They have been training four times a week and they have set up friendly matches against the surrounding school to fine tune their skills and rectify mistakes.

“It’s important to get the boys used to playing competitive soccer so they aren’t intimidated in the finals,” Mkhize said. “Our final preparations will focus on the mental aspects of the game to ensure the players have fun and don’t crack under pressure.”

There were 31 schools at their regional finals and Momphela started off red hot, scoring 9 goals in their first two matches.

That qualified them for the quarter finals. They beat Waterloo Primary School from Verulam 5-0 and went on to beat Amndlakazulu Primary School 2-1 in what was to be their toughest match of the day.

The final game was against Daluxolo Junior Primary School from Kwa-Mashu. They scored their first goal in the first half and their defence communicated well and held out, making them Pinetown District champions for the third time.

The teams participating in the provincial finals are:

Amajuba District - Enkululekweni Primary School
Lembe District - Shakaskraal Primary School
Mgungundlovu District – Muzi Thusi Primary School
