School of Excellence gets through to the Kay Motsepe Schools Cup Gauteng Inter-District Play-offs

The SAFA Transnet Football School of Excellence was started by ex Bafana Bafana captain, Neil Tovey, in February 1994 with the sole purpose of further developing exceptionally talented players that attended his many soccer clinics held around the country to feed into the professional ranks. Fast forward 21 years and the objective of the school is still the same.

The school’s Under-19 team are Gauteng’s Ekurhuleni North district winners of the Kay Motsepe Schools Cup, sponsored by the Motsepe Foundation and Sanlam, and while the coach, Lefa Mathebula would like to emulate the 2012 victory again this year and win the R1 million as national champions, that is not the focus of the school

“We don’t measure our success by wins but by the players we produce for professional teams.” Mathebula said. “We obviously want the team to win the Kay Motsepe Schools Cup this year but winning must be in the context of development. Every year the competition gets tougher and tougher, but we concentrate on the growth of our players.”

The School of Excellence has a policy of keeping coaches with their teams as they progress through the age groups, so Mathebula has been with this group of players since 2011 when they came to the school as under-14s.

“We don’t have 18 and 19 year-olds at the school, he explains. This is a young group of players, but they have been together for a long time and have grown into a tight unit,” he said.

Mathebula has been coaching since 1999 and is well qualified. He has a Level 2 SAFA coaching Qualification, CAFB licence, FIFA Grassroots Coaching Qualification and a BTech in Sports and Exercise.

He explained the school’s selection process which involves going to all nine provinces to look for the best young players. “We have a very strict Identification programme, looking for players that stand out above the rest. We look at technical proficiency, athleticism, technical awareness and mental strength.

“The players have to go through a number of phases before they get offered bursaries at the school. We run a tight ship at the school and give opportunities to players that are willing to learn and take what we teach them and make a success out of it.”

The School of Excellence has produced many star players over the years. Currently, Paseka Sekese, was part of the 2012 team that competed in the Kay Motsepe Schools Cup and currently plays for Bidvest Wits, as does his 2012 team mate, Abednigo Mostatlhaga. Aubrey Mapahosa of Mpumalanga Black Aces is also a product of the school.

While the road to the Gauteng inter-district phase has been tough, Mathebula is optimistic about the tournament this year, and thinks they might reach the national finals.

“But we are taking each game and level as it comes,” he said. “We don’t want to focus on the bigger picture and lose focus on the next phase of the tournament,” he said.

There are several star players in the 2015 team. Two of them: Siyabongakonke Mbatha and Edwin Sikhwama played for the under-17 national team at the 2015 CAF U-17 African Youth Championships, while another - Dlozi Ndaba – was one of four players in the whole country chosen to travel to Brazil to participate in a talent search in the hopes of signing a contract with a European club.

Mathebula is a firm believer in a South African style of soccer and is critical of the PSL-affiliated academies who try to adopt a European style of play.

“People should definitely look forward to the South African style of football from us”, he said. “We want to restore faith in our own style, embrace it and show other teams that South African football still exists.”

Sanlam Kay Motsepe Schools Cup National Finals will see a school walk away with R1 million

The national finals of the Sanlam Kay Motsepe Schools Cup take place at the King Zwelithini Stadium in Umlazi, Durban from 24 to 27 September. The 18 provincial champions and runners-up will be vying for some serious prize money: the winning school will be granted R1 million to fund much needed sporting and educational projects, the silver medallists get R600 000, third-placed school gets R500 000 and fourth place gets R400 000. The nine provincial champions have already won R100 000 each for their schools.

The games will start at 8am every day, Tuesday to Thursday, while on the final day there will be only 2 games: the 3rd/4th play-off and the final, followed by the prize presentations at approximately 2pm.  There will be music included on the final day with Biz Nuz, Mayma Kay and Professor entertaining the crowd before, during half time and immediately after the final game, so soccer fans should come in numbers to future Bafana Bafana players in action.

The teams started their gruelling qualifiers in March and it is now down to the last stretch, and with it will be the scouts and agents that come to sign up the top Under-19 talent in the country.  “This is what the Sanlam Kay Motsepe Schools Cup is all about,” said Frank Louw, Sanlam Sponsorship Manager.  “We at Sanlam understand the value of development and the opportunity it gives youngsters to achieve what they hope for. We believe that the Sanlam Kay Motsepe Schools Cup creates opportunities that have a positive impact on the youth, and provides exposure to scouts to source talented players to nurture and turn into professionals that will be future heroes and role models.  We are proud to be part of the process.”

There will be a new champion this year as title-holders, Gauteng’s School of Excellence, were knocked out at the provincial final.

Again this year the finals will see a blend academy players vs the rest.  Free State’s Harmony High School, the most successful school in the history of the competition, will be there again, but they were beaten in their provincial finals by Bloemfontein’s Louis Botha Technikon High School, who are in great form and must be pre-tournament favourites.

Gauteng’s hopes rest with Pretoria’s Rosina Sedibane and Clapham High School, who have the players from the Mamelodi Sundowns Youth Academy in their ranks. Others to watch out for are Limpopo’s Benny’s Care Academy and East High of Mpumalanga.

Then there the schools who have advanced to the national finals for the first time this year. They include Sebetswane Secondary from North West, and that province’s runners-up Freedom Park Secondary School. Limpopo will be sending a new school in their runners-up, FK Tijiane High Schools, while the winners and runners-up from both the Eastern Cape and KwaZulu-Natal will be making first appearances. They are Eastern Cape’s Executive Academy and Ndamase Senior Secondary as well as KZN’s Welabasha and Sibongumusa High Schools.

Previous Winner through to Sanlam Kay Motsepe Schools Cup Gauteng Provincial Finals

Rosina Sedibane Modiba Sport School, from Laudium in Pretoria, is through to the Gauteng Sanlam Kay Motsepe Schools Cup provincial finals taking place at the Muckleunek Stadium in Mamelodi on Saturday, 17 August. Games start at 9am.

They were runners-up in the Gauteng finals last year and finished 3rd in the national finals. The team’s coach, Tumelo Malabo, says they are hoping to do better this year and are looking forward to the upcoming challenges. “We are planning to win the provincial title and qualify for the national finals again,” he says. “We have been playing in this tournament for many years now and know what is expected of us. The challenge is that the standard of football in Gauteng is increasing all the time and we know that it will not be easy.”

As third place-winners in the competition last year, the school won a total of R500 000 in prize money. They have submitted their wish list to the trust that administers the prize money and are awaiting the implementation of it. “We asked for the school fields to be improved, for washing machines and dryers to be installed, and for big screen TVs,” Malabo said.

Rosina Sedibane expected to make it to the knockout stages of the tournament, so they have been focussed on preparing for just that, Malabo says. “We practise 5 times a week and make sure that we have a friendly match every Saturday. After every game we look back to see where we went wrong and where we are lacking in our tactics. We are currently rectifying our defensive tactics and coming up with ways to create opportunities to score goals.”

Three of the players from 2012, Thabo Moloi, Snethemba Ngidi and Cebo Meyiwa, are now playing for SuperSport United.  None of them could play in the national finals last year because they had commitments for the South African U20 team. “Without them we still finished third.  We are now using the boys to come and help us coach and even teach the youngsters a few tricks that they have learned,” Malabo said. “They are giving back to the school and I believe that their presence at the school is significant to the others that aspire to be like them, they encourage the other players and they look up to them.”

The 8 teams competing include:
Mohloli High School (Sedibeng East)
Rosina Sedibane (Tshwane South)
Clapham High School (Tshwane North)
SAFA School of Excellence (Ekurhuleni North)
Thaba Jabula (Johannesburg North)
Tharabollo High School (Sedibeng West
Sunward Park (Ekurhuleni South)
Waterstone College (Johannesburg South)

Ends.

Sanlam Kay Motsepe Schools Cup player, Thuto Mphahlele, debutes for Supersport United

Thuto Mphahlele, captain of the victorious School of Excellence team in the 2012 Sanlam Kay Motsepe Schools Cup, made his professional soccer debut recently when he played for SuperSport United against the visiting Manchester City team.

He feels it is an honour to be playing for SuperSport. “So far I have played one game for the team, it was against Manchester City and we won 2-0.  I was nervous and excited at the same time; I could not believe that I was playing against a renowned International soccer team. That’s where I see myself in the years to come, playing for an International team.”With the PSL League starting this weekend, judging by his performance in the pre-season build up, he could well be in line for the PSL Rookie of the Year.

The 19 year-old defender comes from a soccer-loving family.  His father, Kgosi Mphahlele, was a soccer player, he used to play for a local team in Mahikeng and Thuto started taking an interest in the game at the age of 9 years, playing in the yard around the house, and for his school, Sol Plaatje Primary School.

He started at the School Of Excellence at the age of 12 as he wanted to attend a sports academy because he knew his soccer career would be developed and taken care of there.

In 2007 he attended trials at the SuperSport Tottenham Hotspur Development Academy, and although he wasn’t accepted, he never gave up on that dream. “In 2011 I went back for trials again and this time around I got accepted and since then I have been playing for their development team,” he said. “Then in January 2013 I got signed up by Supersport United FC, which has always been my dream.”

Thuto was part of the School of Excellence team in the Sanlam Kay Motsepe competition for five years from 2008 to 2012. The highlight was undoubtedly last year when they won the competition, which meant they earned the school R1.1 million. “It was a huge achievement for us as a team and for the school.  Knowing that I led the team to victory as captain was special to me.”

Two of his team mates are also now playing professional soccer - Stanley Muishond, who is at Vasco Da Gama FC and Tshepo Mabuya who also plays for SuperSport United. “I think that the Sanlam Kay Motsepe Schools Cup is very important because the players get to be seen by scouts from the PSL teams,” Thuto says. “If it was not for the Sanlam Kay Motsepe Schools Cup, I would not be where I am today. I admire Mr Motsepe for his dedication to soccer development.”

Thuto has been back to his old school where he gave a talk to the current players. “I told them to love and respect the game of soccer, if they ever make it big they should always remain content and respectful.”
Although his dream is to be a professional player, Thuto understands the importance of getting a qualification as well. “I am currently studying Accountancy through Unisa, I am a firm believer in education and my father is quite strict when it comes to education.  At the moment I am enjoying my time at SuperSport and I look forward to playing more games for the team.”

Sanlam Kay Motsepe Schools Cup Champions will defend their title in the Gauteng Provincial Finals

The defending champions of the Sanlam Kay Motsepe Schools Cup, the football tournament that offers the biggest prize money in Africa, Gauteng’s School of Excellence, are safely through to the 2013 provincial playoff stage, having beaten Badirile High School 13-0 in their inter-district final.

Whitey Tshowa, assistant coach of the team, said their progress so far has been expected and that they are looking forward to defending both the provincial and national titles. “Winning is what we strive to achieve in each and every game, we don’t want to disappoint those who support us.  We did not lose a single game in the qualifiers,” he said.

It is at this stage that the tournament gets harder, says Tshowa.  “We are hard at work preparing for the provincial finals, the boys are continuing with our training programme and we will soon start with the team selection.”

As national winners last year the school received R1 million in prize money, and a further R100 000 as winners of the Gauteng title.  Tshowa says they have asked the trust that administers the prize money to fund the upgrading of their 4 fields. “We want to make them top of the range, to put up shelters on the fields for the technical team and to put in an irrigation system as well,” he said. “We will also be upgrading our gymnasium, getting more exercise equipment, and we want to build a board room specifically for the coaching staff “

Tshowa said they are not looking at any team as special competition in the upcoming finals. “We take each game as it comes, but I have seen Clapham High School play and they are an aggressive team; in their previous game they beat the other team by eight goals. Nonetheless, we are not scared of them and we look forward to facing them in the upcoming games.”

Striker, Abednego Mosiathlakga, has been identified by Tshowa as a key player in the games to come. The 19 year-old is in grade 12 and has scored five goals in the preliminary stages of the competition. “He was instrumental in the school qualifying for the provincial finals, and is an exceptionally talented player,” the coach says. “Having been in the Jomo Cosmos development programme for a while has also helped, mainly to build his confidence.  He recently left them to complete his schooling.”

Abednego joined the school in 2008 after successfully passing trials. “My father, Abel Mosiathlakga, was a renowned soccer player in North West and I guess I got my genes from him, but I would like to go right to the top and play for Bafana Bafana one day, and the school is giving me the opportunity to be able to achieve my goal,” he said.

While football is his first love and would like to progress with a career in the sport, Abednego is also aware of the importance of his academic schoolwork and is taking extra maths lessons because he is struggling with that subject. “To an extent, soccer is a distraction, but I just need to find a way to balance the two because they are both important in my life,” he said.
