COCA-COLA® T20 SCHOOLS CHALLENGE HERO OF THE DAY FOR DAY 2

COCA-COLA® T20 SCHOOLS CHALLENGE
HERO OF THE DAY for day 2

Interviews and video footage on www.csamedia.co.za/2015-2016-home.html

Christoffel Klijnhans from Grey College has been named the Coca-Cola® Hero of the Day for day 2 of the Coca-Cola® T20 Schools Challenge national finals.

The prestigious Coca-Cola® Hero of the Day award is presented on each tournament day in recognition of a game changing ‘hero’ moment.  Christoffel was selected for the award by a Coca-Cola appointed panel of cricket experts after he ran out Wiaan Mulder with a one handed pickup and direct hit in his match against St Stithians College.

‘The ball came to me quickly and I saw that there was some confusion between Wandile Makwetu and Wiaan Mulder so I threw it to the bowlers end because Wiaan looked like he was battling to get back, I was lucky to hit the wickets directly and get St Stithains into even more trouble. I was even happier when we got Wandile’s wicket two balls later. We have lost to St Stithians twice this year so we were so happy to finally beat them,’ said Christoffel.

Fetsi Mbele, Coca-Cola South Africa’s Senior Communications Manager: Brand Experience commented, “Congratulations to Christoffel Klijnhans on being selected as Coca-Cola® Hero of the Day for day 1 of the Coca-Cola® T20 Schools Challenge national finals.  At Coca-Cola we believe that it is essential to put platforms such as the Coca-Cola® Schools T20 Challenge in place for players of all ages to reach their full potential. The Coca-Cola® T20 Challenge is Where Heroes Are Made and for many of the players here this week, this is just the beginning of a future in the game.  I look forward to following the likes of Christoffel as they carve out a career for themselves in South African cricket”

Potchefstroom Boys High School competes for outdoor gym

Potchefstroom Boys High School, North West, was one of the schools that competed in the Coca-Cola® 30 Minute Heroes Challenge, a competition introduced to schools participating in the Coca-Cola® T20 schools challenge (cricket) and aimed at getting learners to participate in physical activity.

The concept encourages as many learners as possible to complete a five drill circuit within a 30 minute period. The scores will only be made public once all schools have completed their challenge.  The school that completes the most circuits in the allotted time frame stands a chance to win a prize of an outdoor gym to the value of two hundred thousand rand, which will be installed at the winning school.

All students were invited to participate which resulted in most of the school pitching up to compete. “The boys got into the spirit of things and there were a lot of laughs at the lack of skipping prowess,” said Alexander Paiva, director of sport.

Potch Boys High has not progressed through to the regional finals of the      Coca-Cola® T20 Schools Challenge this year but vow to be back next year.  “We are working on the team for next season in both the batting and bowling departments, said Paiva.

The five drills in the Coca-Cola 30 Minute Heroes Challenge include:
1.    Shuttle runs between 6 beacons, moving a cricket ball from one   beacon to the next.
2.    Target Throwing at a set of wickets.
3.    Skipping with a skipping rope.
4.    Catching balls off a rebound board.
5.    Weaving in and out of 10 slalom poles.

For full competition terms and conditions please visit http://www.cocacola.co.za/".

NORTH WEST KFC MINI-CRICKET COACH IS REWARDED FOR HIS PART IN GETTING KIDS ACTIVE

Mosimanegape Piet Ntlame, a mathematics teacher at George Madoda Primary School in Delarayville, North West, has been named the KFC Mini-Cricket Coach of the Month for December in recognition of his hard work and dedication to the volunteer coaching programme. He wins a trophy, a cap and KFC gift vouchers worth R1 000.

Ntlame was introduced to cricket 12 years ago by Chris Sekgabi, a KFC Mini-Cricket coordinator in the North West, who was encouraging rural schools in the province to get into cricket. “At the time I was a teacher at Gamoeketsi Primary School in the rural village, Khunwana, where we only offered soccer and athletics.   After Chris’ presentation I knew that this was what I wanted to do. The following year he helped me register for the KFC Mini-Cricket refreshers/beginners coaching course where I earned a distinction and immediately started coaching at my school,” said Ntlame.

But he didn’t stop there.  “Chris saw my passion for the sport and he then helped me get a learnership to study for a Level A Hard-ball Cricket coaching course through the North West Cricket Union.  I then studied for a Level C Cricket Umpiring certificate.”

In 2005 Ntlame was transferred to Delarayville and immediately started a cricket team at the school.  “When the neighbouring schools saw what I was doing they asked me to help them do the same. I then started hosting workshops in the area to teach coaching.  I was then requested to start coaching clinics. By mid-2006 I was coaching three schools and approached Northwest Cricket to get involved and I officially joined the KFC Mini-Cricket programme.” Ntlame is currently a KFC Mini-Cricket coach and coordinator for the Dr Ruth Mompati Region in North West.

“I now have 17 lower primary and primary schools involved in the KFC Mini-Cricket programme. I coach about 32 kids, 17 of which are from neighbouring schools.  We train three days a week at my current school,” said a proud Ntlame, who is fully behind the KFC messaging around the tournament, which is to get kids active on the cricket field.

But there are challenges to running the programme in a remote, semi rural area which Ntlame is managing to overcome. “North West Cricket came on board and helped with equipment such as bats, balls and stumps. More recently, the Department of Sports, Arts, Culture and Recreation in the province started assisting us with transporting of teams to regional and provincial competitions.”

While Ntlame has yet to have a professional player emerge from his programme, he hopes to produce one in the near future. “Last year one of my girls, who has graduated from my KFC Mini-Cricket programme to hard-ball cricket, Kgatlhiso Monnapula, received an award at the North West Cricket/PSG function held in Potchefstroom and was invited to the provincial under-17 team trials. She performed well and is attending provincial practices and hopes to be called up for her provincial first cap soon.”

“Four of my players have been invited to North West under-13 provincial trials, namely, Phemelo Van Schalkwyk, Moepeng Bakatha, Dikomela Bopaki and Mmakau Orefile. The trials will take place during the Easter holidays,” concluded Ntlame.

There are now over 100 000 kids getting active by getting into KFC Mini-Cricket. The over 7 000 volunteer coaches in the programme, who generously give their time and skills, will ensure that the kids from the 4 500 schools will be coached more frequently while also improving the standard of cricket.

CENTURIES SCORED ON THE SECOND DAY OF THE 2012 COCA-COLA KHAYA MAJOLA CRICKET WEEK

Two centuries were scored in the afternoon session of the second day of the timed cricket phase in the Coca-Cola Khaya Majola under-19 Week.  Griqualand West’s (Griquas) GM Bruwer (128) and Northerns’ Johann Smit (100 *) ended the run drought in Potchefstroom.

The day's limelight was however stolen by Mpumalanga’s Blake Schraader, who produced an excellent all-round performance against Limpopo to give his side an emphatic nine-wicket victory. He struck an unbeaten 85 runs from just 28. He and Chris Coetzee (45) helped their side to produce the goods.

Limpopo batted first and managed 176 with Mpumalanga’s spinner Wehan Joubert picking up five wickets. In turn, they were restricted to  110 runs in their innings. Limpopo, getting a sniff of a possible victory, declared their second innings on 64/5, Schraader (2/0) was the pick of Mpumalanga’s bowlers.

Johann Smit hit his century from 106 deliveries which helped his side to the second resounding victory of the day against Eastern Province (EP).  He struck 13 boundaries.

GM Bruwer fought a solitary battle against KwaZulu-Natal Inland. He scored all but 59 of his team’s runs. It was however, not enough to save them from defeat. Most of the batting line-up struggled in the morning session with last year’s South African Schools’ opening bowler, Craig Kirsten (5/33) leading the pack. Wehan Joubert (5/35) also picked up a five-wicket haul. The best bowling performance of the day belonged to KwaZulu-Natal Inland’s, Darryn du Pavillon. He grabbed six wickets for only 27 runs against Griqualand West.

Border’s opening bowlers, Ngazibini Sigwili (4/17) and Aphiwe Elembi (2/10) had Nambia in deep trouble, removing their first four batsmen without any of them managing to score a run. There was nevertheless, one run on the scoreboard when they lost their wickets thanks to a bye.  Border won the match on the first innings.

Vasili Orros (77) and Sachinta Galhenhage (29) shared a 97-run partnership for the sixth wicket which saved the Free State from being bowled out for an embarrassing total in their match against the South Western Districts (SWD). The two joined each other at the crease with the score at 37/5. After Galhenhage was trapped leg before wicket by spinner Lance Roelofse, Free State could add only eight runs to their total before being bowled out. Free State returned to bundle SWD out for a mere 50 runs.

ORGANISER OF THE COCA-COLA KHAYA MAJOLA CRICKET CELEBRATES HIS 20 SEASON WITH THE TOURNAMENT AS WELL AS HIS 50TH BIRTHDAY

Tomorrow (Tuesday) is Morgan Pillay’s 50th birthday. The honorary organising secretary of the Coca-Cola Khaya Majola cricket week finds himself in Potchefstroom for the occasion - a long way from his family and home – but that’s the way it has been for the last 20 years in a row and hopes it’s going to be that way for a couple of years still.

December 18th always falls in the middle of South Africa’s biggest schoolboy cricket tournament and Morgan has been passionately involved.  First he was part of the organising committee and 17 years ago was made the permanent organising secretary.

“It’s tough being away from home of course,” he says, “but I get to spend my birthday every year surrounded by the many great friends that I have made at this week and in the service of the youth, which is what I am really passionate about.”

Pillay is a Mathematics teacher by profession and is deeply involved in schools and youth cricket in the KwaZulu-Natal Inland region. He has been manager of the South African under-19 team every year since 1995 and, he says, nothing makes him happier than being involved with young people.

He also sees his ongoing service as a tribute to his great friend, the late Khaya Majola.

“Khaya always gave me 100% of his attention when I was with him and he gave me so much advice on both cricket and life. The Coca-Cola Khaya Majola Cricket Week is his living legacy and I am proud to be part of it,” he says.

Morgan Pillay is only the fourth organizing secretary since Coca-Cola came on board 34 years ago. His wish is to get to 21 years of service, but no-one here is betting against him celebrating his 60th birthday at the Khaya Majola in 10 years time.
