Two centuries were scored in the afternoon session of the second day of the timed
cricket phase in the Coca-Cola Khaya Majola under-19 Week. Griqualand West’s
(Griquas) GM Bruwer (128) and Northerns’ Johann Smit (100 *) ended the run
drought in Potchefstroom.
The day's limelight
was however stolen by Mpumalanga’s Blake Schraader, who produced an excellent
all-round performance against Limpopo to give his side an emphatic nine-wicket
victory. He struck an unbeaten 85 runs from just 28. He and Chris Coetzee (45)
helped their side to produce the goods.
Limpopo batted first
and managed 176 with Mpumalanga’s spinner Wehan Joubert picking up five
wickets. In turn, they were restricted to 110 runs in their innings.
Limpopo, getting a sniff of a possible victory, declared their second innings
on 64/5, Schraader (2/0) was the pick of Mpumalanga’s bowlers.
Johann Smit hit his
century from 106 deliveries which helped his side to the second resounding
victory of the day against Eastern Province (EP). He struck 13
boundaries.
GM Bruwer fought a
solitary battle against KwaZulu-Natal Inland. He scored all but 59 of his
team’s runs. It was however, not enough to save them from defeat. Most of the
batting line-up struggled in the morning session with last year’s South African
Schools’ opening bowler, Craig Kirsten (5/33) leading the pack. Wehan Joubert
(5/35) also picked up a five-wicket haul. The best bowling performance of the
day belonged to KwaZulu-Natal Inland’s, Darryn du Pavillon. He grabbed six
wickets for only 27 runs against Griqualand West.
Border’s opening
bowlers, Ngazibini Sigwili (4/17) and Aphiwe Elembi (2/10) had Nambia in deep
trouble, removing their first four batsmen without any of them managing to
score a run. There was nevertheless, one run on the scoreboard when they lost
their wickets thanks to a bye. Border won the match on the first innings.
Vasili Orros (77) and
Sachinta Galhenhage (29) shared a 97-run partnership for the sixth wicket which
saved the Free State from being bowled out for an embarrassing total in their
match against the South Western Districts (SWD). The two joined each other at
the crease with the score at 37/5. After Galhenhage was trapped leg before
wicket by spinner Lance Roelofse, Free State could add only eight runs to their
total before being bowled out. Free State returned to bundle SWD out for a mere
50 runs.
