DAY THREE COCA-COLA® KHAYA MAJOLA CRICKET WEEK HERO OF THE DAY ANNOUNCED

Matthew Pollard from KwaZulu Natal has been named the Coca-Cola® Hero of the day for day 3 of the 2018 Coca-Cola® Khaya Majola Cricket Week.

The prestigious Coca-Cola® Hero of the Day award is presented on each day of the tournament in recognition of a game changing ‘hero’ moment.  Matthew was elected as the deserving recipient of the award by a Coca-Cola® appointed panel of cricket experts after he took 4 wickets for 11 runs of the match against the Free State at Bishops. When he started bowling Free State were 73/2 chasing 150 to win. He bowled brilliantly and by the end of his 4 overs Free State were in serious trouble at 104/7. Free State ended up only scoring 116/9 and lost to KwaZulu-Natal by 33 runs.

“When I started bowing, I saw that we were under pressure so I just tried to keep it simple and let Free State make mistakes. I was happy that my strategy worked for me and I managed to help my team win today. It is an honor to win the Coca-Cola® Hero of the Day but now it’s important to keep humble and continue to bowl well. ” said Matthew.

Interesting T20 stats from past Coca-Cola® Khaya Majola Cricket Weeks

  • 2015, the first ever T20 century at the week was registered  by Anthony Daiken, Anthony was given the Coca-Cola® Hero of the Day for his efforts.
  • 2017, Jason Raubenheimer took 5/17 for Border against North West in a T20 match and that is still the best figures in T20 bowling at the Coca-Cola® Khaya Majola Cricket Week.

THE COCA-COLA® KHAYA MAJOLA CRICKET WEEK TO UNEARTH CRICKETING TALENT

Coca-Cola® celebrates a great partnership through its sponsorship of the Coca-Cola® Khaya Majola Cricket Week. The 40 year milestone marks the commitment and dedication to the development of young cricketers across the country.

The Coca-Cola® Khaya Majola Cricket Week saw players like AB De Villiers, Graeme Smith, Faf du Plessis, Temba Bavuma, Quinton De Kock, Dale Steyn, Morne Morkel, Kagiso Rabada and Lungi Ngidi who all played for their provincial teams at the Khaya Majola Cricket Week over the years.

There has been some memorable feats at previous Khaya Majola Cricket Weeks. Some of these special moments include:
  • Kagiso Rabada’s 2013 match at Kearsney College, when he hit 35 off 25 balls to help Gauteng beat Western Province in the “main game” of the tournament.
  • Daryn Dupavillon of KwaZulu-Natal Inland taking 7/18 against Northwest and 6/27 against Griqualand West in the same week in Potchefstroom in 2012.
  • In 2015, Anthony Dakin from Eastern Province scored the first ever T20 hundred against Northern Cape in Port Elizabeth.
  • At last year’s Cricket week, Gideon Peters of Northern took four wickets and ran a batsman out in a single over to dismiss Border for 12 in their second innings to win their time cricket match outright.
  • And another notable player was Sinethemba Qeshile of Border who scored one of the best centuries that many of the selectors had ever seen scored at the tournament.

The Coca-Cola® Khaya Majola Cricket Week plays an important part in Cricket South Africa’s (CSA) talent identification process. Talented players spotted at the tournament are channelled into the national under-19 system and into the elite academies in the provinces. The week tournament also provides a stage for the players who have come through CSA’s development structures to perform in top cricketing franchises.

Coca-Cola Khaya Majola Cricket Week is not only about the very best players; however, receiving a school’s provincial cap is the aim for many schoolboy players. The tournament aims to promote development of young South Africans and the experience of competing with their peers. Life-long friendships have been made over the years at the Coca-Cola® Khaya Majola Week and will be made again this year.

ENDS.

SCHOEMAN’S MOMENT OF BRILLIANCE TURNS THE MATCH IN EASTERN PROVINCE’S FAVOUR

SCHOEMAN’S MOMENT OF BRILLIANCE TURNS THE MATCH IN EASTERN PROVINCE’S FAVOUR

Coca-Cola® Khaya Majola Cricket Week
Hero of the day (day 5)

Cole Schoeman from Eastern Province Border has been named the Coca-Cola Hero of the Day for day 5 of the 2017 Coca-Cola Khaya Majola Cricket Week.

The prestigious Coca-Cola Hero of the Day award is presented on each day of the tournament in recognition of a game changing ‘hero’ moment.  Cole was selected for the award by a Coca-Cola appointed panel of cricket experts after he ran out in the form Laurentius Smit from Boland when he was beginning to take the game away from Eastern Cape with a 80 run partnership with Samuel Henderson. Boland went from 103/1 when Samuel was run out and collapsed to 166 all out after Cole’s moment of brilliance.

“It is a very big honor and privilege and I am just happy that I helped the team, because that is what being a team player is all about,” said Cole.

“Congratulations to Cole Schoeman that had a moment of brilliance on the field to run out Laurentius Smit, his moment of brilliance turned the game around for his team and put them into a position to win the game,” said Proteas legend and Coca-Cola Hero of the Day panel lead Victor Mpitsang.

Phindile Phiri, Coca-Cola® Africa’s Senior Communications Manager commented, “The Coca-Cola® Khaya Majola Cricket Week has come to a close and once again it showcased South Africa’s cricket talent. We had many heroic moments in the week with bat and ball but today’s hero, Cole Schoeman,  did something different by changing the game with a great moment in the field. Thank you to our panel of expert judges that spent the week looking for Coca-Cola® Hero of the Day moments, their effort has highlighted many of our future stars and heroes and the boys that have won the daily awards will cherish them for the rest of their lives. ”
