IWC chats to Neil Tovey about Setting up an Academy

South African sporting icon, Neil Tovey will be the latest guest in the next Intune With Coaching live webinar series edition, aimed at providing functional insight on what goes into setting up a sports academy, coaching clinic, and programme, with the focus primarily on football.

The hugely anticipated webinar will take place on Thursday, 01 April at 6 PM LIVE on Zoom Teams. Register HERE and get exclusive access to one of the country’s finest football administrative minds…for FREE.

This episode follows an interview with the Department of Basic Education’s Bongani Zondi around the regulations for the resumption of school sports, and the presentation given by Intune Communication and Entertainment Founder, Kassey Belluigi regarding the importance of building a brand as a coach.

Tovey, an ex-Bafana Bafana captain, led the nation to our only Africa Cup of Nations trophy which culminated with the famous two-nil triumph in the final against Tunisia in 1996, with former president Nelson Mandela working his Madiba magic at the stadium and across the nation.

Following an illustrious career that spanned nearly 20 years, where he represented Durban City, AmaZulu and Kaizer Chiefs for a combined 632 times while notching up 52 caps for the national team, the former central defender also took up coaching. He completed his UEFA A licence with a record 90% pass rate on his way to coaching in and winning the Rothmans Cup, Telkom Charity Cup, and the COSAFA Cup with Banyana Banyana.

Long before serving as the SAFA Technical Director between 2015-2020, Tovey also played an integral part in the forming of the Transnet School of Excellence in 1994, an academy that has since produced elite international and local stars such as Steven Pienaar and Bernard parker.

During the QnA with host and Intune Communications and Entertainment Director, Shawn Belluigi, Tovey will be discussing the tools one needs to get an academy or clinic off the ground.

This will include the approvals and policies required; the inclusion of education; scouting and recruitment; standard of coaching; coaching programmes; sponsorship; the possible challenges, including the impact of COVID-19, and much more.

There will also be time set aside for the audience to pose their questions to Mr Tovey, to provide full value to the coaches and administrators.

Ahead of the webinar, Belluigi confirmed the idea behind bringing in the stalwart and the choice of the topic: “The restrictions that were imposed due to the coronavirus have been lifted and now it is time to get back to playing school sport. Neil will help coaches setup their academies and coaching structures so we can get back to playing sport as soon as possible.

“I cannot wait until we can spend our weekends watching our kids play their sport of choice and Neil will give us the tools to do it as quickly as possible, that’s what makes this episode so exciting.” he added.

Western Cape schools gear up for the Danone Nations Cup provincial finals

The under-12 Idas Valley Primary School soccer team from Stellenbosch has qualified to compete in the Danone Nations Cup Western Cape provincial final taking place at Steenberg High School on Saturday, 25th May.  The school made it to the national finals in 2017 and believe they can do it again with the assistance of some of the players that compete at club level for Stellenbosch Football Club, who were recently promoted to the Premier Soccer League.

There will be six schools competing for the trophy and a chance to represent the province at the national finals taking place in Gauteng on 15th June.

Idas Valley beat Cloetesville Primary School 3 – 1 in the Winelands regional final to get to the provincials.  “It was a tough match as Cloetesville is a very good soccer school and has some excellent players, but it was our day and we get another chance to repeat our 2017 success,” said coach, Anton Gordon.  “The boys heard how wonderful the trip to Gauteng to compete in the national final was and are hungry to experience it for themselves.”

Gordon has been coaching the under-12 soccer team for many years and he will be assisted by manager, Jo-Ann Baartman.  Neither has a soccer coaching qualification but they have both played the game through school and tertiary education and have a passion for the sport. Gordon was recently made vice principal of the school so his work load has increases substantially, but his love of youth coaching is so great he will continue to make time for that.

“Our final preparations this week comprise three training sessions only. Our one drawback is that we lack a bit of speed this year, but hopefully the boys will peak at the right time. They certainly have the talent including our three exceptional boys that also play for the Stellenbosch Football Club development team.    They will play a key role on Saturday,” said the coach.

The school has produced some star players that have gone on to compete at the highest level.  The most recent is Luke Le Roux, who competed in the Danone Nations Cup in 2013 and currently plays for the under-20 national team.  “We didn’t progress past the regional finals that year, but we produced a great player,” said the coach.

Idas Valley will be competing with Restvale Methodist Primary School (Central Karoo), Masakhane Primary School (Overberg), St Helenabaai Primary School (West Coast), Kuyakhanya Primary School (Cape Town) and Phakamisani Primary School (Eden).

“It won’t be easy as most of the other schools have also competed in the Danone Nations Cup provincial finals at some stage.  I will not take any of them for granted as every year is different with new players and we will take each game as it comes,” concluded Gordon.

The national final winner will join 19 other countries at the world finals taking place in Spain.  The teams will play their final match at the RCDE Stadium (home of La Liga club, Espanyol) in Barcelona, on 12th October.

St David’s Marist from Inanda, Sandton, will compete in the Danone Nations Cup Gauteng provincial finals

St David’s Marist, Inanda, are the Johannesburg Primary School Football Association’s (JPSFA) Danone Nations Cup winners after beating new comers into the tournament, Heronbridge College 2 – 1 in the final match.

Schools from the JPSFA competed in the Danone Nations Cup for the second successive year with 21 schools entering and it was hosted by St David’s Marist Inanda again.

“This is very exciting and something completely different for our team,” said St David’s coach, Thami Nkabinde, who has a FIFA coaching certificate that he obtained in 1994 and renewed through the JPSFA in 2004.

“It was a tough competition,” said the coach. “We saw some great soccer and the tournament was very well organised. The players particularly enjoyed the NutriDay and Yogi Sip products that they were given over the three days.  The calcium and vitamins are so important in keeping energy levels at optimal level as the boys played more often than they are used to each day.”

St David’s was grouped with Northwest Christian School, Emmarentia Primary School, Sacred Heart College, Deutsche Internationle Schule and Greenside Primary School. On the first day they played against Greenside Primary School and the won 2-0. Their second opponents, Deutsche Schule, arrived late and they were awarded 3 points.

On the second day they beat Sacred Heart College 4 - 1 in their first game. “The boys really communicated well, and their team work was excellent,” said Nkabinde.  “It is important that the players understand that team work, as opposed to showboating as individuals,  is what wins games in soccer.  Their accurate passing and making use of spaces as well as utilizing the full field managed to win us the game.”

This camaraderie and team work continued in their second game against Emmarentia Primary School and they won the game with the same margin of victory, 4-1.

The final day they beat the Northwest Christian School 1-0 to top their group and qualify for the semi-finals. “We played Fairsand Primary School in the semis and they cracked under the pressure,” Nkabinde said. “Their communication was poor, and we beat them 3-1.”

That took them into the final against Heronbridge College. “Heronbridge were strong and would have been worthy champions,” Nkabinde said. “We scored twice, but they pulled one back and it seemed like an equaliser was imminent and it was going to go to penalties, however my boys managed to hold on until the final whistle.”

Nkabinde was impressed by the support of the parents at the games. “It was amazing, it would be great if all parents could attend matches and support their children,” he said.

And now the boy’s dreams have come true and they are off to the provincial finals.  “We have no idea what we will be up against, but we have heard from Reddam, who were last year’s winners, that it is going to be tough as the schools registered with the South African Schools Football Association (SASFA) are very experienced in the tournament and have exceptional talent.  We will keep to our game plan and put in a couple of extra training sessions and extra games to ensure we are ready for 25th August.”
