Richardt Ackerman leads Waterkloof Hoerskool to the Cricket South Africa Schools T20 Challenge Title for the second time

Hoërskool Waterkloof the Titans franchise representatives won the 2020 CSA Schools T20 title, beating SACS of the Cape Cobras by 15 runs in the final at the Tuks Oval on Sunday.

It was Waterkloof’s 2^nd title – they won the tournament in 2011 – and they were good value for their victory in high quality final that saw 357 runs scored – the most in the 11 finals held since the competition was first staged.

Waterkloof batted first and after a slowish start their middle order, led by Hardus Coetzer

And Richardt Ackerman, ignited the innings and they eventually got to 186/6 in their two overs. Coetzer ended up on 77 not out, off 54 balls and he struck eight fours and a six . Ackerman made 28 off 12 balls.

It was always going to be a massive task for SACS, but they gave it full go and were up with the run-rate for most of the innings. They lost a flurry of wickets in the last few overs, however, and ended up 15 runs short. When Daniel Smith (50) and Kai Curran (46) were at the wicket their chances looked good. They put on 78 for the second wicket, before Smith was run out by a brilliant throw from the boundary and SACS were chasing the game from then on.

It was Ackerman who did the damage with the ball for Waterkloof. He took 4/17 in his four overs and he was named the man of the match for that performance, along with his 28 not out.

Waterkloof’s SW Kemp made 45 in the final, taking his tally for the week to 206 runs. He was named the batman of the tournament and, as he also took wickets in all of Waterkloof’s games, he was also the player of the tournament.

Oscar Welsh of SACS took 15 wickets over the four days and was given the bowler of the tournament award.

Waterkloof from the Titans and SACS from the Cobras make the final of the Cricket South Africa Schools T20 Challenge

Waterkloof, representing the Titans franchise and the Cape Cobras region’s SACS will meet in the final of the CSA Schools T20 Challenge at the Tuks main oval on Sunday afternoon.

They booked their place in the competition’s prestige showdown by winning both of their games on Saturday and, with a game to go, they are joint leaders of the points table and cannot be passed, irrespective of the results of the final cross-pool games on Sunday morning.

Waterkloof beat the defending champions, St Stithians by four wickets in a thriller on Saturday morning, and followed that up with a convincing, 61-run win over Grey High in the afternoon.

SACS beat Kearsney in the morning and then eliminated St Stithians from the competition, beating them by 15 runs in the afternoon.

The victories meant that SACS and Waterkloof were the only teams to win all four preliminary games on the first two days and they are deserving finalists

SACS’ off spinner Oscar Walsh returned the best bowling figures of the day – 5/20 in his four overs against Kearsney in the morning game, he took a further two sticks against SACS in the afternoon.

There were four half centuries scored in the day. The top score came from Reuben du Toit of St Stithians, who made 81 against Waterkloof. Nicholas Keevy was 61 not for Grey High against Graeme College, Kearney’s Cade Carmichael was 75 not out against Queens and Nhlanhla Ntleko got 59 for Queens in the same game.

Three Sides Remain Unbeaten on Day 1 of the Cricket South Africa Schools T20 Challenge

The 11^th CSA Schools T20 Challenge national finals tournament got under way at the LC De Villers complex at the University of Pretoria on Friday.

Eight schools, representing the six CSA franchises, along with the winners of a parallel process involving the CSA Focus Schools programmes in the inland and coastal regions, have been divided into two pools. They play three pool games, followed by two cross-pool games, after which the two teams with the most points will meet in the final on Sunday afternoon.

At the end of the first day three sides, the defending champions St Stithians, Waterkloof and SACS had won two games out of two. St Stithians beat Queens and St Andrew’s; Waterkloof defeated St Andrew’s and Queens; and SACS beat Grey High and Graeme College.

There is a lot of cricket still to be played, but those three did look like the form sides on day one. Saturday morning’s clash between St Stithians and Waterkloof is going to be decisive in pool A, while SACS take on Kearsney in what could be the Pool B decider.

As far as individual performances are concerned, there were two half centuries scored. SW Kemp of Waterkloof made 59 against Queens and Jody de Sousa got 58 for St Stithians against St Andrew’s. Joshua Voight was 45 not out for Grey High against Kearsney

Kemp was also one of those who shone with the ball. He took 3/14 against St Andrew’s in the morning. Two other bowlers took three wickets each. Liam McCarthy took 3/5 for St Stithians against Queens and Kyle Welman took 3/17 for Waterkloof against St Andrew’s.

History in the tournament

-        The team has never progressed out of the initial stages.

-        This is the first year that the schools is a focus school so when they lost to St Andrews they had another avenue to progress.

Road to the National Finals

-        St Andrews scored 145 and Graeme College fell just short scoring 135.

-        They beat Muir College by 9 wickets.

-        They played Hudson Park in the Coastal Focus School Semi Final and restricted them to 131/4 in 20 overs. Graeme got the total with 5 balls to spare. Jeremy Blydeveld scored 45.

-        In the Coastal Focus School final they played against Western Cape Sports School. Graeme never really got going and only managed to make 114/6. Western Cape got off to a great start and at one stage they were on 82/1 but they lost 9 wicket for 21 runs and Graeme College won the match. Jeremy Blydeveld took 4/16.

Potential Heroes

-        Mark Amm is the son of the late Philip Am. He is a off-spinner and top order batsman. He has played provincial cricket in the U15 and U17 weeks.

-        Romario Fritz is a top batsman and has scored three centuries this year.

-        Siphesihle Madlongolwana is a quick left arm opening bowler and has taken a lot of wickets this season.

Prospects for the Coca-Cola T20 Schools Challenge National Finals

-        The team is aware that it is going to be a tough tournament for them.

-        They don’t play teams like King Edward VII School in their normal fixtures so they are looking forward to playing against them in their first match.

-        They would love to emulate what Hudson Park did in 2017 where they came into the tournament as a focus school and ended up coming second.

-        It is gong to be a great experience for the boys and they will get to test themselves against the very best in the tournament.

Coca-Cola Schools T20 Challenge Nationals returns to the Capital

8 top cricket schools to battle it out to be crowned Coca-Cola T20 Schools champion

The national finals of the Coca-Cola Schools T20 Challenge will return to the Capital City, Tshwane, after the premier youth cricket tournament was successfully hosted in 2014. The tournament will take place on 16-18 March 2018, at University of Pretoria and will see a new school be crowned 2018 champions.

The 2018 edition of the tournament will see a new champion be crowned after 2016 and 2017 winners, St Stithians College, who represented the Highveld Lions, were knocked out during the provincial phase of the tournament.

This season, Coca-Cola added a new element to the tournament that is aimed at spreading the talent search wider, by bringing on board Proteas player, Temba Bavuma and key cricket experts, to identify and reward players at each of the six franchise finals. These players represent the Coca-Cola T20 All-Star team and have been given the opportunity to be part of the national finals.

The Coca-Cola T20 All-Star team members will to take on a CSA Development Hub team as a curtain-raiser to the final match of the tournament. The team includes: Matthew Montgomery (batsman, Clifton College), Simon Holmes (fast bowler, Clifton College), Matthew Thorn (opening batsman, Outeniqua), Rudi Klaasen (batsman, Paul Roos Gimnasium), Neil Bothma (wicketkeeper-batsman, HTS Marais Viljoen), Khaya Nyamathe (batsman, Marais Viljoen), Mason Zacharea (left-arm spinner, Northern Cape), Reeza Alexander (batsman, Northern Cape High School), Odilile Modimokoane (left-arm spinner, Rustenburg High School), Stiaan Swanepoel (allrounder, Rustenburg High School), Matthew Dewer (batsman, Selborne) and Matthew Fourie (bowler, Selborne.
