SACS win the Western Province Coca-Cola® T20 Schools Challenge Provincial Final

South Africa College High School (SACS) have won the opportunity to play in the Cobras franchise final of the 2019 Coca-Cola® Schools T20 Challenge tournament. This was after winning the Western Province Coca-Cola® Schools T20 Challenge Provincial Finals that were played at Rondebosch Boys High School, Newlands on the 23rd and 24th February.

This year’s provincial finals were played over two days and started off at the quarter final stage with Wynberg Boys High School, Western Cape Sports School, Strandfontein Cricket Club, Bishops, Rondebosch Boys High School, Primrose HUB, Newlands Cricket High School and South Africa College High School (SACS) playing against each other representing their province.

SACS beat Newlands Cricket High School by 2 wickets in the quarter-final, Rondebosch Boys High School by 5 wickets in the semi-final and Wynberg Boys High School by 2 wickets in the final.

The final was extremely exciting going down to the final ball of the game where SACS batsman, Ben Levitt, managed to hit 2 runs to win the game for his team. There was little to tell between the teams but there had to be a winner and SACS managed to hold their nerve and win the match.

The SACS captain Daniel Smith said “It is special to play in the Coca-Cola Schools T20 Challenge where we get to test ourselves against the top teams in South Africa. We don’t want to look to far ahead but we would like to win our franchise finals and represent the Cobras in the Coca-Cola Schools T20 Challenge at national finals.”

The winner of the Franchise finals will join other five franchises winners and the two schools that qualified through the CSA Focus School programme at the competition’s National Finals at the University of Pretoria from the 15th to 17th March 2019. The Coca-Cola Schools T20 Challenge winner stands to walk away with R110 000.00 for their school.

Hilton the Dolphins representatives in the Coca-Cola Schools T20 Challenge took on two of the top teams in today’s opening day at Tuks in Pretoria.

In the morning match, Rondebosch were no match for Hilton College.

Hilton bowled tight lines and fielded extremely well to reduce Rondebosch to 60 all out. Never a good enough score especially against a team like Hilton.

The Hilton bowlers all took wickets, John turner 3/13, James Ritchie 2/7, Michael Scalanders 2/14 and Michael Booth 2/9.

Hilton knocked off the score in 7.4 overs with the loss of 2 wickets.

In the Afternoon Hilton played against St Andrews School from Bloemfontein. Coming into the tournament St Andrews, along with Hilton College, were the favourites to take the title.

Hilton started a little slowly and after 10 overs were on 58/1. Soon afterwards Michael Sclanders went out after securing a good base for the team to play off and they then duly opened up as 92 runs came off the last 10.

Gareth Screuder scored 28 off 14 and Michael Booth 21 off 15 to push the total to 150/5 in their 20 overs.

Hilton then put pressure on St Andrews from the first ball with frequent wickets and St Andrews never looked like they were going to chase down the tricky target.

St Andrews were eventually bowled out for 103, 47 runs short despite the efforts of SA U19 and World U19 player Gerald Coetzee who tried hard to chase down the score, finally falling for 33.

Thomas Dixon 3/25, James Ritchie 3/18 and John Turner 2/12 were the chief destroyers.

The wins leave Hilton in a very promising position and they look nearly certain to make the finals.

Grey High School were the only other school to finish the day unbeaten.

In their first game they played against St Albans. Grey batted first and managed 144/9 with LJ du Preez scoring 45, while Jordan Landsberg claimed 4/18 and Harshil Jeeva 3/9 for St Albans.

St Albans tried hard to chase down the total but fell 24 runs short, scoring 120 all out. Nicholas Fowler 3/27 and Eliah Thorne 3/18 took most of the wickets.

Their second game ended up being the game of the day against King Edward VII school from Johannesburg.

KES scored 198 runs in an earlier game against Graeme College and once again scored a large total getting 174/7 in 20 overs. Callum Broodryk top scored with 53 while Grey’s top bowler was Arend Visser who took 3/23.

Grey High then took the attack to KES and initially rattled the Johannesburg side. KES however would not give up and carried on fighting through a brilliant bowling spell from Obakeng Maila who took 3/25 in his 4 overs. Tristan Stubbs played a great captains innings scoring 51 runs off 42 balls, allowing other batsmen to play the big shots. The turning point in the game was in the 16th over. Grey high needed 52 runs to win in 5 overs going into the over. Cody Postumus, known by his team as a big hitter, hit three sixes in the last 3 balls and the team hit 22 runs in the over.

That put Grey on the path to win the match by 6 wickets.

Grey also have a foot in the final, but there is an outside chance that both KES and St Andrews School can still qualify.

Coca-Cola Schools T20 School Profile: Rondebosch Boys High School: Cobras Representative

History in the tournament
-         Rondebosch have been the Cobras representatives on many occasion but last won the tournament in 2013.
-         Since 2013 they lost in the Provincial Finals in 2014 to Paul Roos and to Wynberg in 2015.

Road to the National Finals
-         Rondebosch had only one scare in the tournament and that was against the Primrose Hub where Rondebosch scores 180 run and Primrose managed to get to 165.
-         En route they played against the Western Cape Sports School and limited them to 120. They chased the score down in 15 overs with the loss of only 2 wickets.
-         In their Provincial Semifinal they limited SACS to 109/9 and were on 35/1 in 5 overs when the rain stopped play. The managed to beat SACS by a coin toss.
-         In the Provincial Finals they played against Bishops and limited Bishops to 105/7 in their 20 overs. Rondebosch were on 58/0 when the rain came down and they won on better run rate.
-         In their first Franchise final they played against Outeniqua and scored 147/6. This score was too much for Outeniqua and they were bowled out for 82.
-         In their final Franchise match they played against Paul Roos and bowled them all out for 59. Rondebosch chased it down for the loss of 2 wickets.

Potential Heroes
-         Michael Moore is a fast bowler that has developed a lot in the last couple of years. He is considered one of the fastest bowlers in the Western Cape. He is only in grade 11 so he will also be back in the tournament next year.
-         Justin Broad is an number 3 batsman that comes in and builds an innings so others can play around him. He is often there at the end of the game to see his team through.
-         Guy Sheena is our off-spinning all-rounder and number 6 batsman. He changes the pace of the game and before the opposition knows it he get 4 overs done very cheaply. When he comes into bat he bats very quickly and find boundaries easily. He can take the game away from the opposition.

Prospects for the Coca-Cola T20 Schools Challenge National Finals

-        Their biggest strength is in the depth and variety in their bowling attack. They have a genuine quick bowler, a couple of medium pace bowlers, a right arm spinner and a left arm spinner.
-        To do well in the tournament their top four batmen will have to do well enough to allow their bowlers to bowl to a good target or if their bowlers restrict the opposition, the batsmen will need to make sure that they chase down the total.
-        “The team is not focused on the results but instead we want to focus on our procedures so that if we do our procedures correctly we should get positive results. We don’t want to pressurize the boys so we are going to get the boys to enjoy themselves,” said Jaco Zeeman Rondebosch High School’s sports administrator.
