Hoërskool Waterkloof win the Northerns Coca-Cola® T20 Schools Challenge Provincial Final

2011 champions, Hoërskool Waterkloof won the Northerns Coca-Cola® T20 Schools Challenge Provincial Finals and now stand the chance of representing the Titans at the Coca-Cola T20 Schools Challenge national finals that will be played between the 15^th and 17^th March 2019 in Pretoria.

This year’s provincial finals were played over two days with eight schools divided into two pools of play to represent their province in the Titans franchise final. The schools that made it were Hoërskool Garsfontein, Hoërskool Waterkloof, Prestige College and Cornwall Hill College who were in group A, while group B was made up by Pretoria Boys High, St Albans College, Midstream College and Hoërskool Centurion.

Hoërskool Waterkloof and Hoërskool Centurion won their respective groups and met each other in the final. Hoërskool Waterkloof beat Prestige College by 39 runs, Hoërskool Garsfontein by 22 runs and Cornwall Hill College by 8 wickets respectively to get to the final.

In the final, Hoërskool Centurion got off to a great start and had Hoërskool Waterkloof in trouble at 32/3 and 64/4 before Hoërskool Waterkloof fought back to post a very good total of 177 thanks to the 97 runs from Jordan Hermann who got  his century after batting nearly the entire innings.

Hoërskool Centurion came in to bat with Richardt Ackerman posting 26/3  and  Simeon de Bruyn posting 4/15 making sure that Centurion were never in the match and bowled them out for 136. Hoërskool Waterkloof won by 41 runs.

The winner of the Franchise finals will join other five franchises winners and the two schools that qualified though the CSA Focus School programme at the competition’s National Finals at the University of Pretoria from the 15th to 17th March 2019. The Coca-Cola T20 School Challenge winner stands to walk away with R110 000.00 for their school.

Coca-Cola Schools T20 School Profile: Prestige College: Inland Focus School

History in the tournament

-        This is the second time that Prestige College has qualified for the Coca-Cola Schools T20 Challenge National Finals.

 Road to the National Finals

-        Prestige College were knocked out by St Albans early in qualifying for the tournament.

-        Prestige went on to qualify via the Cricket South Africa focus school qualification route.

-        Prestige College played against Soshanguwe Hub and hit 210 runs in 20 overs. Polite Shingange scores 54. Prestige bowled them out for 101.

-        Prestige played against Queens High School and they batted first. They only scored 90/9 with Polite Shingange scoring 33. They defended the score by bowling Queens out for 65 runs Tumelo Banda took 3 wickets.

-        In the Inland Focus School final they played against St Dominics College. Prestige batted first and scored 139/6. Koos Motahatsi scoring 38. They bowled out St Dominics out for 74, Kagiso Ngwenya taking 4/11.

Potential Heroes

-        Polite Shingange is a good opening batsman that is the backbone of the Prestige batting line-up. He often bats for long periods of time allowing the rest of the team to bat quickly around him. He played in the U17 provincial week.

-        Tumelo Banda is a young all-rounder in the team. He takes a lot of wickets for the teams and when he bats he scores quickly. He played in the Provincial U15 week last year.

-        Kagiso Ngwanya is one of the new players in the team. He is a young fast bowlers and he played in the Provincial U15 week last year.

Prospects for the Coca-Cola T20 Schools Challenge National Finals

-        The team has learned a lot since their debut in last year’s Coca-Cola Schools T20 Challenge in Stellenbosch, the boys have a lot more confidence and they are ready for the challenge.

-        One of the aspects of our game that has improved a lot is our fielding. We create a lot of pressure in the field and that give our bowlers the opportunity to take wickets.

-        The strength in our team is that we can post a total and defend it.

-        They are in a very tough group so their first focus is to win 2 games and then take it from there.
