COCA-COLA® T20 SCHOOLS CHALLENGE HERO OF THE DAY FOR DAY 1

COCA-COLA® T20 SCHOOLS CHALLENGE
HERO OF THE DAY
All footage is on http://www.csamedia.co.za

Gareth Wolmarans from Paarl Gimnasium has been named the Coca-Cola® Hero of the Day for day 1 of the Coca-Cola® T20 Schools Challenge national finals.

The prestigious Coca-Cola® Hero of the Day award is presented on each tournament day in recognition of a game changing ‘hero’ moment.  Gareth, who is only 15 years old, was selected for the award by a Coca-Cola appointed panel of cricket experts after bowling the final over of the match in his match against Afrikaanse Hoër Seunskool (Affies).

'When I started bowling Affies needed 12 runs to win the match, I tried to clear my mind and concentrated on putting the ball in the right spot. The first 5 balls went pretty much where I wanted them to go so by the time I bowled the last ball we had won the match even though the ball was a full toss and went for a 6. I am happy to have helped us win our first match of the tournament,' said Gareth.

Fetsi Mbele, Coca-Cola South Africa’s Senior Communications Manager: Brand Experience commented, “Congratulations to Gareth Wolmarans on being selected as Coca-Cola® Hero of the Day for day 1 of the Coca-Cola® T20 Schools Challenge national finals.  At Coca-Cola we believe that it is essential to put platforms such as the Coca-Cola® Schools T20 Challenge in place for players of all ages to reach their full potential. The Coca-Cola® T20 Challenge is Where Heroes Are Made and for many of the players here this week, this is just the beginning of a future in the game.  I look forward to following the likes of Gareth as they carve out a career for themselves in South African cricket”

RONDEBOSCH TO PLAY WATERKLOOF IN COCA-COLA T20 SCHOOLS CHALLENGE FINAL

Hoërskool Waterkloof will meet Rondebosch Boys’ High School in the final of the Coca-Cola Schools T20 Challenge at Newlands on Sunday (starting at 11.45am).

The two teams, representing the Titans and Cobras franchises, respectively, beat St Stithians (Lions) and Framesby (Warriors) in their final outings in the round-robin phase of the competition in Stellenbosch on Saturday afternoon to progress to the final.

Waterkloof lost once in the competition – to Dolphins representatives Westville Boys’ High - while Rondebosch were beaten by The Knights representatives, St Andrew’s, on the first day. That meant that Rondebosch ended up on the same number of points as Westville, but they went through to the final by virtue of winning the pool game between the two.

Waterkloof were too strong for St Stithians in their last pool game. They restricted the Joburg side to 124/9 in their 20 overs, with Henco Vorstman again getting among the wickets, taking 3/26 in his four overs.

For once the Saints run machine, Ryan Rickelton failed to fire and Marques Ackerman was their top run-scorer with 28.

Waterkloof then chased the target down for the loss of five wickets, although they were put under the pressure in the end and they got the winning runs with just one over to spare. Waterkloof’s Wynand Grobbelaar was named man of the match for taking 2/14 in his four overs.

Rondebosch, batting first against Framesby, made 134/4, with Matthew Christensen getting 46 – his fourth big score of the weekend, which earned him the man of the match award.

Framesby were then restricted to 100/9, thanks mainly to some fine bowling by Kay Skovaard-Petersen, who took 3/6 in his four overs.

Christenen said he is delighted his side is in the final. “When we first started the tournament we gave away too many extras and the ball was going all over the place, but we settled down and did our best.

“We had home ground advantage, but we didn’t get arrogant and we went into the last game knowing our rival was Westville as we both had a chance to go to the final. We kept our focus on the game in progress against Framesby, however, and kept our heads level and we came through in the end.”

Westville needed a bonus point win against St Andrew’s to make it into the final, and although they won quite comfortably they did not do enough. St Andrew’s made 144/3, with Jacobus Pienaar top-scoring on 64. Westville reached the target in the 19th over, for the loss of six wickets. Louis Snyman smashed 37 runs off 17 balls to earn him the man of the match award.

Snyman said his team had a fantastic tournament. “We won three of our four games which is good. We did much better than last year so we are going home happy,” he said.

“The Coca-Cola T20 Schools national finals is good for us as it gives the school great exposure. It was an honour wearing our Dolphins gear but it didn’t put us under pressure. We played for the team and we all gave it our all.”

Scores

St Andrew’s 144/3 (Pienaar 64, Du Plessis 47; Rugbar 2/20). Westville 146/6 (Pentz 32, Schlemmer 32, Snyman 37; Rous 2/26). Westville won by four wickets.

Rondebosch 134/4 (Christensen 46, Van der Berg 24, Hamza 20; Tait 2/29). Framesby 100/9 (Swanepoel 22, Tait 24; Galiem 2/11, Skovan-Petersen 3/6, Dawood 3/18). Rondebosch won by 34 runs,

St Stithians 124/9 (Ackerman 28, Rabada 18; Vorstman 3/26, Van Rensburg 2/52, Grobbelaar 2/14). Waterkloof 127/5 (Strauss 22, Rossouw 32; Glover 2/21). Waterkloof won by four wickets.

WATERKLOOF, RONDEBOSCH WIN WITH BONUS POINTS

Waterkloof (Nashua Titans) and Rondebosch Boys’ High (Nashua Mobile Cape Cobras) both scored bonus points wins in the first round of matches at Coetzenburg in the Coca-Cola Schools T20 Challenge on Friday.

The third match between St. Stithians (bizhub Highveld Lions) and St Andrew’s (Chevrolet Knights) was a nail-biting affair that the former won by one wicket with three balls to spare. The Johannesburg side nearly paid the price for bad running between the wickets with two of their top batsmen being run out in the first four overs.

They had been set a modest victory target of 76 but got themselves into trouble going for big shots rather than knocking the ball around for one’s and two’s.

Luke Stanger took 4/22 and also hit the winning run to be named Man of the Match.

Janneman Malan made the highest score of the morning (81 not out off 57 balls with 9 fours and 2 sixes) to set up Waterkloof’s total of 153/2 that proved to be far too much for Framesby (Chevrolet Warriors). He is the youngest of three brothers to represent his school. He was well supported by Danie Rossouw (40 not out off 27 balls, 1 four and 2 sixes).

Framesby never got out of the starting stalls thanks largely to an inspired spell from Henco Vorstman who took 3/9 in his first three overs and finished with 4/26. Theo Stapelberg put in a good all-round performance for the losers, bowling four tidy overs of left-arm spin to take 1/14 and then making top score of 44 off 38 balls (1 four and 2 sixes).

Rondebosch had a similarly convincing win over Westville (Sunfoil Dolphins), recovering from 2/2 to make 144/4 and then dismissing their opponents for 86. Man of the Match Mathew Christensen, like Malan, batted through the innings for 73 (62 balls, 5 fours and a six).

Westville made a rapid start to their reply, reaching 50 in 6 overs, but some injudicious shot selection led to their demise with their last nine wickets falling for 35 runs. The wickets were shared around with Jay Stevens and Ryan Klein both taking 2/11.

COCA-COLA T20 SCHOOLS ‘SHOW YOUR CLASS’ AT THE NATIONAL FINALS

The Coca-Cola Schools T20 national finals week starts in Stellenbosch on Friday, 22 February, 2013. It will see six schools representing the six Cricket South Africa franchises play four games each, with the top two going through to the final on Sunday, which will be played as a curtain raiser to the Ram Slam T20 Challenge Match between the Cape Cobras and the Dolphins at Newlands.

The participating schools have come though their own provincial knockout tournaments, followed by showdowns with the winners of the other provincial champions in each franchise region.

This year’s lineup has two familiar faces, and four who are making an appearance at this level for the first time. Those who are back again are Pretoria’s Hoërskool Waterkloof (Titans), who play in the finals for the third time, and who won the title in 2011, and Westville Boys’ High, who represented the Dolphins last year.

The newcomers are St Andrew’s School of Bloemfontein, who will represent the Knights; Johannesburg’s St Stithians College (Lions); Framesby of Port Elizabeth (Warriors) and Rondebosch Boys’ High (Cobras).

The 20-over format, with its unpredictability, is always going to throw up surprises and this year’s fairytales are St Andrew’s and Framesby. St Andrew’s are busy celebrating their 150th anniversary in style. They not only had to see off mighty Grey College to take the Free State title, but then came up against Hoërskool Noord-Kaap, the Griquas champs, in the Knights franchise final. Noord-Kaap has been at the national finals three times and are the 2012 champions.

St Andrew’s came through, and with the help of Sinebhongo Ntshona their off-spinner who has been on duty with the Coca-Cola SA under-19 side, who are playing a Youth Series in Cape Town against England.  they are certainly in with a chance.

Framesby have had possibly the toughest task making it through to the finals. They had to play Grey High and St Andrew’s, among others, in their PE area, then face Union High from the inland area, before facing Hudson Park, the Border champions.

According to their cricket director, Chris Van Niekerk, they have a young side that has been molded by the tough experience of nine knockout games in a row. “More than half the squad will be back next year, and our two stars, Andre Emiljo and Ernest Stapelberg, represented Eastern Province at under-15 and under-17 level, respectively,” he said.

“Our strength is definitely in our bowling attack, but we showed in chasing down a big total against Grey that we can bat too. Everyone is very excited about this opportunity to show what we can do at a national level,” concluded Van Niekerk.

It’s also St Stithians College’s first opportunity at this level. They will be bolstered by the return of Coca-Cola U-19 national team fast bowler Kagiso Rabada. Their cricket director, Wim Jansen, is confident that they have the side to do well. “Apart from Radaba’s pace, we have two good spinners in Jean Landsberg and Marcus Ackerman,” he said.

“Our strength is probably in our batting, however, Ryan Rickleton is in great from as a batsman. He has been well supported by Luke Stanger and the captain, Angus Ellis-Cole.”

Waterkloof make a record-equaling third appearance at the Coca-Cola Schools T20 finals and their director of cricket, Neels de Villiers is confident that they have the balance in the side to put them in with a chance of winning the title for a second time. “It was a tough task getting through the Northerns region of the competition,” he said. “We had to beat Affies, Pretoria Boys’ High, Centurion and Menlo Park. After that we beat the Limpopo and Easterns winners quite comfortably.”
De Villiers believes their key players at the tournament are going to be batsmen Janneman Malan and Danie Rossouw, while in spinners, Reynard Grobler and Divan Bester, they have potential match-winners.

Cobras representative Rondebosch Boys’ High must be one of the favourites going into the tournament. They have three members of last year’s very successful Western Province side from the Coca-Cola Khaya Majola Cricket Week still in their ranks including SA Colts player Hayes Van der Berg. The other two are quick bowler Dayyan Galiem and batsman Zubayr Hamza. No fewer than seven other members of the squad represented Western Province at age group level last year.

“The Coca-Cola T20 Schools national final is a culmination of six months of gruelling qualifiers,” said Craig van Niekerk, Coca-Cola SA Marketing Assets Manager.  “The six teams to play in the Western Cape are South Africa’s top U-19 school teams in this format of the game and from a Coca-Cola perspective we are proud to have been able to create the platform to allow cricketers to showcase their talent, to be recognised and to share their achievements – as expressed in our campaign expression:  ‘Show Your Class”

COCA-COLA SOUTH AFRICA U-19 CRICKET TEAM CLINCH THE COCA-COLA YOUTH ODI SERIES AGAINST ENGLAND U19

COCA-COLA South Africa took a winning 3-0 lead in their five-match under-19 Youth ODI series against England when they won the third match by 10 runs at Boland Park on Saturday.

The match was very similar to the second one on Friday with England leaving themselves with too much to do in the closing overs and South Africa having their total set up by one big innings in the middle order from Man-of-the-Match Greg Oldfield supported by some good hitting at the death.

The South Africans managed to score 100 runs in their last 10 overs for the loss of only three wickets which was an outstanding effort by any international standard.

They will also be highly encouraged by the fact that they put their youngest side in the field for some time with seven of the players available to play in next year’s ICC under-19 World Cup in Dubai.

England have also fielded a youthful squad for the most part and both sides look well advanced in their preparation for next year’s tournament.

This match followed exactly the same trend as the second one the day before with England winning the toss and deciding to field first in stifling conditions.

The move looked as though it might be paying off when the first three South African wickets fell for only 48 runs before David Bedingham and Greg Oldfield stabilised the innings with a fourth wicket partnership of 58 in 14 overs.

England still looked in a strong position when they had half the South African team out for 134 in the 33rd over but the lower and middle-order, packed with all-rounders, rallied strongly and more than doubled the total to finish with a highly competitive 270.

Greg Oldfield (82 off 111 balls, 8 fours) and Jason Smith (49 not out off 48 balls, 1 four and 2 sixes) took the lead role as they had done the previous day. Oldfield was dropped twice in the second half of his innings but these lapses only cost England a handful of runs just when he looked set for a well-deserved century.

Smith was assisted by some spectacular hitters. Corbin Bosch hit 23 off just 8 balls (5 fours) before being run out when he slipped in turning to regain his ground. Sine Ntshona and Tshepo Moreki also joined in the boundary hitting and South Africa scored 100 in the last 10 overs for the loss of only three wickets.

Ngazibini Sigwili kept up the pressure when England batted, taking 2/14 in his opening spell of 5 overs. Corbin Bosch added the wicket of Ed Barnard to have England in much the same position as South Africa had been – 37/3 after 12 overs.

Ben Duckett, who has been impressive in the middle order, followed soon afterwards when he attempted a reverse sweep in off-spinner Ntshona’s first over and gave a straight forward catch to Murray Coetzee.

At 51/4 and with a required rate of just over a run a ball England had a lot to do in the remaining 34 overs.

England finally got a partnership going when Jonathan Tattersall and Ryan Gibson came together at the fall of the fifth wicket. They added 49 off 59 balls before Gibson miscued a cut and was caught at backward point, leaving England 130/6 and needing a further 141 at more than eight to the over.

Tattersall was largely left to play a lone hand, reaching his half-century off 54 balls with 2 fours. Tattersall shared a 50-run partnership with Joshua Shaw and hit a defiant six before perishing for 83 off 76 balls (5 fours and a six).

England continued to fight to the death with Shaw also reaching a half-century to go with his three wickets but, as in the second match, they had left themselves with too much to do at the end and fell 10 runs short of the South African total with their last pair at the crease.
