Matswathaka
Primary School from Bethlehem in the Free State is the Danone Nations Cup’s
Dihlabeng cluster champion. They beat their six counterparts in a round robin
tournament and according to the team manager, the team this year is exceptional
and could well go all the way to the national finals – even be the team to
represent South Africa as the World Final in Brazil later in the year.
“Apart
from 2 players, the entire team is new and I can already see they are
different,” said team manager, Charles Mokoena. “The youngsters are
competitive and determined and our striker, Lehlohonolo Mokoena, is our key
player. He is respectful and eager to learn so listens.”
The
school coach will again be Swai Vilakazi, who is a parent of a school learner.
Mokoena
admits there are two schools Matswathaka might well encounter in the regional
final that could cause his team problems, and those are Loch Lomond and
Motshepuwa Primary Schools. “We have played them both in the past
and they are strong in defence making it difficult for us to score.
Matswathaka
won every game at cluster level this year. “I am excited and feel proud of my
team. We have already scored 9 goals, as opposed to 5 in the entire season last
year. However, we might be a step closer to our goal of playing in the
national finals, but the next phase is to compete against other cluster winners
in the regional finals which will not be easy.” so the competition is getting
tougher.”
The Free State provincial finals will take place at the
Clive Solomon Stadium, Bloemfontein, on the 12th April.
