For the second year in a row Gauteng and Western Province player the “Main” game of the 2013 Coca-Cola Khaya Majola Cricket Week

The “main” game of the 2013 Coca-Cola Khaya Majola Week at Kearsney College will be a repeat of last year’s unofficial final and it will feature the pre-tournament favourites, Western Province and Gauteng.

They met KwaZulu-Natal and Eastern Province, respectively, on Thursday in what were in effect semifinals in this rain- affected tournament, and they both won comfortably.

Gauteng beat Eastern Province by eight wickets, chasing down a 211-run target with six overs to spare. Grant Roelofsen (99) and Yaseem Valli (63 not out) were well in control of the run-chase. They batted responsibly, working the ball around and punishing the bad deliveries. It took a brilliant caught and bowled effort by EP’s Bradley Bopp to dismiss Roelofson one run short of what would have been a well-deserved century. Valli was still there on 63 not out at the end.

Western Province posted a massive 290/6 against KwaZulu-Natal in an innings that was shortened to 46 overs due to a delayed start because of a wet outfield. Opening batsman Clyde Fortuin did the damage, making a quick fire 123 off just 115 balls, with 13 fours and two sixes.

KZN, to their credit never threw the towel in and they lasted for 41 overs before being bowled out for 248, 52 runs short.

Luke Schlemmer (53), Andile Phehlukwayo (50 not out) made half centuries for the hosts. Other batsmen to get half centuries on the day were: Jurie Snyman (67 for Easterns v Border); Bathanda Isaac (52 for Border v Easterns); Murray Leith (67 for EP v Gauteng) and Bradley Bopp (54 for EP v Gauteng).

There were two “fifers”. Curley Louw of Boland took 5/20 against Northerns and SWD’s Anro Moolman got 5/34 against Northwest. Three bowlers took four wickets. Gauteng’s Keith Dudgeon took 4/37 against Eastern Province; Ngazibini Sigwili of Border took 4/17 for Border v Free State and Lwandisa Zuma took 4/18 for KwaZulu-Natal Inland against Mpumalanga.

Today’s fixtures are: Western Province v Gauteng, Eastern Province v Border, KwaZulu-Natal v Northerns, Easterns v Mpumalanga, Boland v Namibia, Free State v Griquas, Northwest v KwaZulu-Natal Inland, SWD v Limpopo
