NORTHERN CAPE HOSTS FIRST SANLAM KAY MOTSEPE HIGH SCHOOL CUP PROVINCIAL FINAL AND NORTH WEST CLUSTER FIXTURES PLAYEDKICKS-OFF

Dazzling displays of soccer magic are expected in this year’s Sanlam Kay Motsepe Schools Cup tournament as close to 2 000 schools countrywide compete for their share of R3.4 million prize money. Northern Cape will be the first province to host their Finals which will take place at the Galeshewe Stadium, Kimberley, on Saturday, 19 May.

The Provincial winner, as well as the runners up, will go on to play in the National Finals where the prize money is a whopping R1 million. The Provincial winner will be rewarded with R100 000.

But there is a long way to go.  Currently over 100high schools from the five Northern Cape regions (Pixleyka Seme, Dr John Taole, Francis Baard, Namaqualand and Siyanda) are competing in their various Clusters with the Regional Finals being played on 5th May 2012. The fight is on to beat 2011 champions, Rietvale High School.

Rietvale has competed in five Sanlam Kay Motsepe Schools Cup competitions of which two resulted in a place in the National Finals. Coach Chris Kamies helped the 2011 team win the Provincial finals (11th place finish in the National Finals) and admits he has a big challenge this year:  “We have lost some of our key players that did so well last year but have found some promising new talent.  We are positive and ready for battle and all we can do now is do our best and see what happens.”

The Sanlam Kay Motsepe Schools Cup is the richest School competition in South Africa with a total of R3.4 million on offer.  The nine Provincial winners each receive R100 000, the National winner R1 million with R600 000, R500 000 and R400 000 going to second, third and fourth places respectively. Prize money is used to fund legacy projects identified by each school.  No money is handed over to the schools as a cash donation.

Meanwhile the Dr Kenneth Kaunda Region in the North West will be holding their cluster fixtures this week. Sol Plaatje Secondary School were the 2011 North West Provincial champions winning the R100 000 but finished in 15th position in the National Finals.  Provincial runners-up, Boithaopa Secondary did better in the National Finals finishing in sixth position.
