Nelsville Primary School heads for Gauteng to represent Mpumalanga at the Danone Nations Cup National Finals

Nelsville Primary school, from Nelspruit, topped the league and met second place finishers, Qambekile, who had home ground advantage, in the under-12 Danone Nations Cup Mpumalanga provincial finals that took place in Ermelo last weekend and will travel to Gauteng on 15th June to compete in the national finals.

“An excellent final,” said Mandla Mazibuko, Mamelodi Sundowns scout, who attended the day to look at the talent on offer.  “Both teams had their strengths and they played with intelligence.  Nelsville were the better team in the final match with  two players that complimented each other extremely well and they worked wonders in beating their opposition.  You could also see that both teams had analysed each other’s strengths and tried to counteract these.  Throughout the day Qambekile scored first in all their games to boost their players confidence, and they did this in the final as well, but Nelsville came back and scored twice to win the match.  They both play with technical and tactical intelligence which made the game fun to watch.”

Both Nelsville and Qambekile competed in the provincial finals for the first time, and from the fine display of soccer they put on, this will not be the last time they will be seen.  “The final was a tough and competitive game,” admitted coach Rewano Swarts.  “They analysed us well.  Our philosophy is to play the Tiki-taka style of soccer which is short passes and keeping possession.  They saw through this and picked us up well braking us up by playing Route One football which is long passes.  They also tampered with our height as our boys were a lot shorter than theirs, but we capitalised on the counter attack and won in the end.”

The team has week points that need to be worked on said Swarts.  “My goalkeeper’s weak point is corner crosses from corner kicks. We conceded most of our goals throughout the build-up to the provincials through this, however I was surprised to see we only conceded one goal from a corner cross in the final so the work we are doing to stop this is bearing fruit.”

Analysis of games is key to success, point out Swarts. “We analysed their game plan all the time and fed information to our boys who listened to our instructions and executed well.  It is all about execute, execute, execute and when the boys see the successful results it gives them pleasure.  Our counter attack gave us the final victory.”

The National final is a bigger motivation says Swarts.  “The boys are excited to get to the finals as last year it was unfortunate that we were knockout out earlier in the tournament.  We will work hard over the next month and I know that the boys will play better soccer.  We will also be focusing on confidence building and help make them better players.  A confident player is a better soccer player.”

The nine provincial winners will compete in the national finals in Gauteng with the ultimate winner going on to represent the country at the world finals in Barcelona.  All the team will play their final match of the tournament at the RCDE Stadium (home of La Liga club, Espanyol) in Barcelona, on 12th October 2019.

To celebrate Danone’s centenary and the 20th edition of the Danone Nations Cup both the 2018 and 2019 world finals will take place together this year.  The winner of the 2019 national finals will join last year’s winner, Nomlinganiselo Primary from the Western Cape.

The world finals are also a platform for Danone to educate youngster on important brand messaging.   “This year also coincides with our new brand positioning and purpose, One Planet One Health, which reflects our belief that the health of humankind and that of the planet are interlinked and both need to be protected and nurtured. Through the Danone Nations Cup we are contributing to bringing this vision to life by promoting the importance of exercise. Further, we are encouraging our young athletes to ‘Play Football, Change the Game’, which is a rallying message to unite children, irrespective of their backgrounds and cultures, and to encourage them to become catalysts for positive change,”  said Marlinie Kotiah, GS Director, General Secretary, Danone Southern Africa .

Park Ridge Primary school in Sedibeng West joins the Danone Nations Cup

The schools are back in session, and registrations for the 2018 under-12 Danone Nations Cup soccer tournament for kids between the ages of 10 and 12, which kicks-off in March, are coming in thick and fast.

Among the names on the registration forms received so far are some old and some new ones. Park Ridge Primary school in Sedibeng West fits into the latter group

The school was founded over 40 years ago to provide a school for the children of immigrants who were recruited to work for Iscor.

Sello Radebe, the team coach, has been at the school for 3 years now teaching life orientation and social skills, and was recruited into coaching soccer this year.

Although he has never played the game at a high level, he has a passion for the game and believes soccer values are important to kids as they teach them respect, team work, trust and time-keeping.

He decided to enter the school into the competition after talking to the local SA Schools Football Association (SASFA) district coordinator.

He doesn’t know much about the schools they will be playing against in their cluster, so he is busy with research to prepare the boys the best he can. “I’m excited that in my first year of coaching we can enter a tournament like the Danone Nations Cup,” he said. “The school is currently busy with athletics, which gives me time to do research on the tournament and styles of play. I get that information from YouTube and the Danone Nations Cup Facebook group.”

Schools can register for the competition by contacting the national coordinator at the SA Schools Football Association (SASFA), Themba Tshabalala, on 011 403 2844, 084 290 0602 or 072 588 4957. Alternatively, they can visit the Danone Nations Cup South Africa Facebook page or go to www.facebook.com/dncsouthafrica to download the necessary documents. Registration opens for the 2018 Danone Nations Cup

Registration for the 2018 edition of the largest soccer tournament in the world for kids between 10 and 12 years is open. Schools across the country are invited to become part of the Danone Nations Cup, which touches the lives of over 2 million people annually.

2018 will be the 19th edition of the tournament, which is the brain child of Danone, the biggest global producer of dairy products.  South Africa has been participating in the tournament since its inception and has won the world title three times: in 2003, 2007 and 2009.

The tournament is run in partnership with the South African Schools Football Association (SASFA) and it comprises games beginning at cluster level, with winning schools progressing to regional and then provincial levels, culminating in the national finals where the national champion team that will represent the country at the Danone Nations Cup World Finals is identified.

Last year, over 2 700 schools registered to play in the initial rounds of the tournament, which is the most to have registered in the history of the tournament in this country.

In 2017, for the first time, schools belonging to the Johannesburg Primary Schools Football Association joined the tournament. They hosted their own final with Reddam House of Bedfordview, beating King David Sandton and going on to compete in the Gauteng provincial finals. The number of schools from the association is expected to grow substantially in 2018.

Among the schools who are expected to be the first to enter are Benny’s Sports Development and Academy from Limpopo (2016 national champions) and the defending champions, Mophela Primary School from KwaZulu-Natal.  The former school, under coach Mbishi Mokwena, has already started preparing their team.

The basis on which the competing nations decide on their champion team differs from country to country. In South Africa it is an inter-school competition. Other countries send their top club youth sides or academy teams, whilst others select regional or even national teams at under-12 level.

The Danone Nations Cup is built on fundamental principles: participation, friendship, accessibility and fair play. The message is to believe in your dreams and to promote healthy living through sport to as many people as possible in the world.

The eventual 2018 South African national champion team will be going to the Danone Nations Cup World Finals at a venue still to be decided.
