Highlights from the 2009 Danone Nations Cup world finals.

The last day of the Danone Nations Cup is in full swing at the Orlando Stadium in Soweto. As the 2009 tournament had to be postponed due to the outbreak of the H1N1 flu virus, this year’s Danone Nations Cup is a feast of junior football: a total of 40 games are being played throughout today to decide who takes home the trophies for 2010 and 2009, respectively.

No red or yellow cards to be seen in this format of soccer, but passionate play has been the order of the day. Some of the highlights:

Poland vs Austria 2009:
Poland started off well but Austria soon found their feet and went on to dominate much of the game. Austria took the lead leaving Polish defender and keeper staring at one another as the ball slowly rolled in between the goal posts. Laduma!
Poland went into attack mode immediately but failed to score an equaliser. Austria thus finishes in 21 st position overall and Poland 22nd

Egypt and France 2009 u/13:
France, who has won the tournament twice previously (2000 and 2008) beat Egypt 1-0 in a rather uneventful match. Having scored early in the game, the boys in blue held on to their advantage, leaving little room for the North African team to move.
France finishes in 19 th position overall and Egypt in 20th position.

Canada vs Russia 2009 u/13:
By all accounts, this turned out to be one of the more exciting clashes. Fast paced and fiercely contested. Canada was the first to hit the back of the net, but the Russians didn’t trail behind for long, equalising almost immediately.
Both teams impressed with their passing and defending, eliciting much support from the stands. In the end, it was the mixed Canadian team – they have two girls playing in the team – that triumphed 3-2.
Canada finished in 17 th position; Russia 18 th.

There was a buzz of excitement when Zinedine Zidane came onto the field.

Gauteng's Jet Nteo is the Sanlam Key Motsepe Cup Champions.

Jet Nteo High Schools are the new champions of the Sanlam Kay Motsepe Schools Cup and are R1 million rand richer. They beat Harmony High School, three times winners of this tournament 2 -0.

Jet Nteo High School dominated the final and hardly ever looked liked leaking a goal. They scored their first goal through Joseph Motloung  in the 15th minute of the first half and their second through a goal by Sello Tsilo due to an error by the Harmony goal keeper.

I spoke to Phillip Ndlovu, the team coach, and asked him what the school is planning to do with the money. He spoke about things like sports grounds and a computer room but whatever they do it has to be planned and proposed to Sanlam and if the Sanlam advisors find that it will benefit the school it will be implemented.

Harmony took home R600 000, while third place Eletsa who beat Ntsu 1 – 0 in the losers final pocketed R500 000. Ntsu got R400 000. Jet Nteo’s team captain Pule Konopi and team mate Bongani Mahlangu were voted best goal keeper and best player of the tournament respectively.  Siyanda Khumalo from Johannesburg Secondary got the top goal scorer award, while SA Van Wyk High got the fair play award.

Results and Tables for Day 1 of the Sanlam Kay Motsepe Cup

Day
one of the Sanlam Kay Motsepe Cup was very exciting and the football was
brilliant to watch. I have sorted out the results and compiled tables for the
various groups.

 The top two teams from
each group and the two best placed third teams will qualify for the quarter
finals that will be played on Wednesday. I think that the third placed teams
from group A and group C will get through and only the top two teams from group
B will get through. That is not because group B is not a good group, nearly all
the teams in group B still have got a chance to qualify but the other two groups
have a team that seems to dominate the group. These two teams have left the rest
of the teams in their group to fight for the minor positions.

Group A

Harmony High School from the Free State has taken a big lead
in this group. It will take a huge effort from some of the other teams to stop
them from making the quarter finals. Eletsa High School, Johannesburg Secondary
School and Mthwazi High School look like they are going to fight for the second
place in the group and an automatic qualification for the
Quarterfinals.

Group
B

Group
B is wide open; no one from this group has been able to break away. K. I. Thwala
will have to do a lot of work to make the quarter finals and will have to rely
on other results to get through. All the other teams have a good chance and
today’s games will be fantastic and hard fought out.

Group
C

The
teams in this group only managed to play 2 games each. So far Seiphemelo
Secondary School looks like the favourite to go through but they have still got
a couple of very difficult games to play. Jet Nteo, OR Tambo and
Siyangempumelelo Secondary School are all waiting to pounce and take the top two
places.
