Exceptional talent found at the Mamelodi Sundowns Development Camp

Mamelodi Sundowns development coach, Rhulani Mokoena, believes the future looks bright for Bafana Bafana.  This is based on the exceptionally skilled players, scouted at the Sanlam Kay Motsepe Schools Cup  national finals, currently in a camp put on by the Club.

“I want to commend my team of scouts for their selection as all 22 boys that are  here have the potential to make the Bafana Bafana team one day.  There are no exceptions,” said Mokoena.  “From the first day I could tell that they were technically skilled so we focused on the mental side and their overall understanding of the game,” said Mokoena. “There they lack a little bit, but that’s a common mistake that all players have - a lack of applying their mental game onto the field.”

The squad has played 2 games so far. They beat a Nike Chance team 3-0, and drew 0-0 with the Sundowns u-19 Academy team (Clapham High School). “That’s not a bad result considering the fact that they have never played as team before,” says Mokoena. “I can name a few boys that have caught everyone’s  attention here . Tani Mpusana-Louis Botha, Jason Skippers of-Cloetesville High School, Lugiano Knopp of Okiep High School and Reginald Tsoela of Harmony are all quality players who could well be playing in the PSL soon.

“It’s difficult to speak of major improvements in a few days as more than a week is needed to improve a player’s skills. Our main goal for the camp was to target specific techniques, team work and communication with fellow players and the mental aspect of the game.  These boys are so used to their way of doing things, but they now know what is expected of them and I know that they will carry what we taught them forever.”

This was endorsed by Gian De Jongh of Okiep High School in the Northern Cape.  “What I have learnt from this one week has impacted my game for ever.  Perhaps the most enlightening lesson is how to better position myself on the field.  Sometimes players don’t know where they are supposed to be when a game is in play, and that’s where mistakes tend to happen. You need to optimize your position without slacking off on your duties.”

It’s also been about making friends and De Jongh says he has got to know Kabelo Mabesa more as a friend than a team mate. “We talk about anything and our friendship will continue even after the camp,” he said.  “I know that I will go back home as a different player, I am sure that I will pass it on to my mates that didn’t get the opportunity to come along.”

For Reginald Tsoela he saw the camp as an opportunity to promote his soccer career.  “I would love to play for Sundowns and give them back what they have given me this week.  As a striker you need to be able to make the field work for you.  I learnt so much about creating spaces and opportunities to score goals.  To help with our mental approach they took us out of our comfort zones and I learnt that I can play comfortably in the midfield and centre back.”

Most of the players that attended the camp have just completed Grade 12 and Sundowns has invited all the local Clubs to attend the games and see if they are interested in signing up some of the players.  “I wish we could sign up all the players, but we will only be looking at three or four signing and hopefully the other Clubs will sign up the rest,” said Mokoena

FREE STATE SCHOOL UNVEILS ITS SANLAM KAY MOTSEPE SCHOOLS CUP PROJECTS

Harmony Academy of the Free State’s Lejweleputswa Region has celebrated the completion of the legacy projects made possible from the prize money the school received after their second-place finish in the 2010 Sanlam Kay Motsepe Schools Cup.

Harmony were joined in celebration by representatives of Sanlam, the Motsepe Foundation, the Ubuntu-Botho Development Trust and the South African Schools Football Association (SASFA), the Free State education department and the local Ward Councillor.

Harmony walked away with a total of R700 000, including R100 000 for being crowned Free State Provincial Champions, and utilised the funds to buy a 44-seater bus, a sprinkler system and a projector and screen for presentations.

Run under the auspices of the South African Schools Football Association (SASFA), the Sanlam Kay Motsepe Schools Cup is the biggest schools football tournament in the country with the most prize money of over R3m. The winner takes R1 million, R600 000 for the runners-up, R500 000 and R400 000 for third- and fourth-place finishers respectively. Each school that wins their Provincial final receives R100 000. The tournament prize money is spent on legacy projects identified by the school.

Harmony Headmaster, Andrew Monnane, could not contain his excitement: “Our football team, referred to by the community as ‘The Eagles’, has done the school proud. I cannot express in words my gratitude to the sponsors for what our prize money has done for us.”

“While we excel on the football field, education remains a key priority and we now have our own 44-seater bus to take our pupils to attend extra classes. We have to go from Virginia to the Central University of Technology in Welkom. And, of course, the bus will take our footballers to play official games. Last Saturday, we travelled to Boschoff stadium in style to compete in our first 2011 Sanlam Kay Motsepe Schools Cup Regional game,” said Monnane.

The sprinkler system will be used to maintain the grass on the sports fields while the projector and screen will help with group assignments to further the education of the pupils.

“The partnership between Sanlam, SASFA, Ubuntu-Botho Development Trust and the Motsepe Foundation indicates our commitment to addressing schools’academic and sporting needs,” said Julius Chabeli, Sanlam Business Developer in Free State. “Sanlam understands the value of development and the opportunity it gives youngsters to achieve what they hope for. We believe that the Sanlam Kay Motsepe Schools Cup creates opportunities that have a positive impact on the youth, and provides exposure to scouts for talented players. Importantly, it also contributes to enhanced learning through improved educational facilities for the benefit of the rest of the pupils in the participating schools and the broader community.”

Kenneth Makhanya, representative of the Motsepe Foundation and the Ubuntu-Botho Development Trust concurred with Chabeli: “The partnership with Sanlam and SASFA has afforded us the opportunity to reach as many high schools as possible, touching lives and bringing smiles to as many pupils and communities as possible. It is a great honour and thoroughly humbling to be able to contribute to building strong societies while developing a culture of football in our country.”
‘The Eagles’ have had a good run in the tournament, during the past few years. They were crowned National champions in 2005 and 2008, runners-up in 2006 and 2010 and took third place in 2009. Their 2011 Sanlam Kay Motsepe Cup is underway, but there is still a way to go to put them in the Provincial Finals for the fifth year in succession.

SA SCHOOLS CAN NOW REGISTER FOR THE SANLAM KAY MOTSEPE SCHOOLS CUP

Registration for the 2011 Sanlam Kay Motsepe Schools Cup has opened. Financial services company Sanlam, the Motsepe Foundation and Ubuntu-Botho are encouraging every school in all nine South African provinces, whether private, independent, township or rural, to register to compete in the 2011 edition of the richest schools’ competition which kicks off in March and in which  any school stands a chance of  winning the grand prize of R1 million.

“One of the key objectives of this sponsorship is to get as many football players as possible between the ages of 15 and 19 to compete and possibly to be seen by soccer scouts. Players who stand out will then be recruited into development structures to be nurtured and shaped into professional footballers,” said Frank Louw, Sanlam Sponsorships Manager. “To be able to achieve this we need to encourage all schools to register no matter where they are situated and they have until 28 February 2011 to do so.”

Being open to all schools makes the Sanlam Kay Motsepe Schools Cup the biggest schools tournament in the country with the most prize money: R3,4m in total. The winning schools can utilise the money for any development project that enhances or advances the mission and objectives of the school and/or its immediate community, e.g. building of extra classrooms, upgrading the soccer pitch, etc

The Motsepe Foundation endorses the objectives and rationale behind the sponsorship: “Look at our president, Mr Patrice Motsepe,” said Kenneth Makhanya, representative of the Motsepe Foundation and Ubuntu-Botho. “He achieved success by setting goals and working hard to ensure he reached them which often meant sacrifice. The Sanlam Kay Motsepe Cup was initiated by Mr Motsepe through the Motsepe Foundation in memory of his mother and to recognize the integral role she played in his life – encouraging him through school, then university and helping him through the dark times as well. This is what we want for the South African youth and Sanlam, having the same vision, has created an ideal partnership.”

To register to compete in the Sanlam Kay Motsepe Cup, please contact the South African Schools Football Association on +27 11 567 2010 or Frank Louw at Sanlam on +27 21 947 2093 before 28 February 2011.
