St Stithians won the 2014 Coca-Cola Schools T20 title,
beating Waterkloof by nine wickets in the final at The University of Pretoria
on Sunday. This is not only the first time the Lions has won this
tournament, but the first time they have played in the final.
They were the only team to go through the tournament
unbeaten after beating Grey College by 63 runs in their final pool game on
Sunday morning to win all five matches in the round-robin phase of the
competition.
Their victory in the final was their second over
Waterkloof, having beaten them by 49 runs when they met on the first day.
Waterkloof were bowled out for 75 in the 18th
of their 20 allocated overs, with St Stithians spinner, Connor Beauchamp doing
most of the damage, taking 3/12 in his four overs.
Fast bowlers, Brandon Glover (2/11) and Nicholas
Scholtz (2/4) also weighed in.
Saints needed just 11 overs to reach the total.
Ricardo Vasconcelos was 42 not out in the end (off 33 balls). He was well
supported by Marques Ackerman, who was with him on 20 when the game ended.
Glover was named man of the match in the final, and
the award for player of the tournament went Kingswood College’s Marcus Lombard
who made 237 runs in his five innings, at an average of 79.
Westville Boys’ High’s Alexander Whitelaw made 108 in
his side’s loss to Kingswood on Sunday morning – the fourth century of the
weekend.
Saints’ Ryan Rickelton, Evan Jones of Waterkloof and
Kingswood’s Marco Lombard were the other centurions.
St Stithians walked off with R110 000 in all for their
efforts in the tournamemt.
