KFC Mini-Cricket kids triumph against Proteas

The Proteas travelled to Northdene Primary School today for the 3rdmatch of the 2016/17 KFC Mini-Cricket Kids vs Proteas Tour.  They took a 2-0 series lead into the game, giving them the opportunity to wrap-up the 4 match series with a win against Northedene’s KFC Mini-Cricket team.  The kids however were more than up for the task and with guidance from all-star coach and former Proteas speedster Mfuneko Ngam, they managed to keep themselves alive in the Tour with an easy victory over the Proteas.

The kids won the toss in front of a massive home crowd and elected to bowl.  The Proteas got off to a slow start, struggling against the pace of the Northdene opening bowlers.  Connor Johnstone was one of the stars for the kids, often foxing his Proteas opponents with his lethal leg spin and sharp fielding. Khaya Zondo attempted to up the run rate, hitting a massive 6 over the commentary box but in the end they could only string together 47 runs in their 8 overs.

Nathan Moore and Nathan Geel opened the batting for the kids and piled on the runs fast with Proteas bowler Lungi Ngidi going to the boundary on multiple occasions.  Vernon Philander managed to slow the run rate for a short period but in the end it wasn’t enough.  The kids put on one of the great performances in the Tour’s 4-year history, cruising to victory with 8 balls to spare.

Ngam was excited by the result and proud of his charges. “The KFC Mini-Cricket kids were brilliant today with both bat and ball.  We had a clear game plan which they executed with precision against the world’s top ODI team,” said Ngam.  We now have everything to play for next week in the Eastern Cape.  We will use this victory as momentum going into the game and I’m sure the kids will have what it takes to level up the series,” he added.

Njabula Mbanjwa was named man of the match on the day. The Proteas batsman struggled with his pinpoint bowling accuracy and lightning speed and only managed 2 runs off his bowling spell.

Proteas bowler, Vernon Philander was impressed by the level of talent in the Northdene KFC Mini-Cricket ranks.  “The KFC Mini-Cricket kids played a great game today and put us under pressure from ball 1.  They have some really skilled kids in their team – it’s great to see such gifted young players coming through in Kwa-Zulu Natal.  If today was anything to go by, we will have a tough task on our hands come the final game next week,” said Philander.

The KFC Mini-Cricket Kids vs Proteas Tour moves next to the Eastern Cape where the kids from Zamaxolo Junior Secondary School will have the chance to level the series when they take on the Proteas on the famous Khaya Majola Oval in Mthatha.

Mike Middleton, Chief Marketing Officer for KFC South Africa concluded, “The KFC Mini-Cricket Kids vs Proteas Tour never fails to entertain – after last season’s 2-2 draw, we are once again heading for an exciting finish!  Coach Ngam remains unbeaten in the history of the Tour and has done a stellar job assisting us in getting many kids active and closer to their heroes over the past four years.  I can’t wait to see what will happen at the Khaya Majola Oval next week.”

KFC Mini-Cricket is played by over 114,000 kids who are coached by nearly 9000 volunteer coaches.

Last season's KZN KFC Mini-Cricket Kids vs Proteas Winners

The KFC Mini-Cricket Kids vs Proteas Tour takes place in all parts of the country and last year it was taken to Umlazi in KwaZulu-Natal, where the kids from Mgada Primary School took on the Proteas at their school. The school’s coach, Melusi Shozi, has been coaching cricket since 2008. Shozi believes that playing against the Proteas inspired the kids to work hard and follow their dreams. Since the Tour match, some of the kids have progressed to play junior provincial for KwaZulu-Natal.

Mgada Primary School teacher and coach, Melusi Shozi
  •         Melusi Shozi has been coaching cricket in his community since 2008 and joined the KwaZulu-Natal Cricket union in 2012.
  •         He obtained his Coaching Level 1 qualification and his currently working towards getting his level 2 qualification.
  •         He is a coach at Mgada Primary School, the Umlazi Cricket Club and the Umlazi hub.
  •         The Umlazi Cricket Club was formed in 1996 and mainly concentrated on the senior teams. In 2008 the club started a development programme, bringing in Shozi to help develop cricket in the township.
  •         In the same year Shozi introduced KFC Mini-Cricket to Mgada Primary School, where he currently coaches.
  •         Shozi’s KFC Mini-Cricket team took on the Proteas in 2016, receiving great exposure and a positive response from the clubs and the community.
  •         Since the Tour match, two of the kids have progressed to play and represent KZN. Khuleka Mseleku made the KZN U11 team and Minenhle Ntobela, who won the KFC Man of the Match in the KFC Mini-Cricket Kids vs Proteas Tour match, played for the KZN U13 team.
  •         Shozi believes that the Tour is a great platform because it gives kids the opportunity to meet their cricket heroes and get a taste of what feels like to play with professional cricket players.
  •         Shozi also believes that cricket development is important in his community because it’s a gentlemen’s sport, so it teaches kids how to respect their opposition, work with other players and also teaches them that with hard work you can achieve your goals.
  •         The biggest benefit that the school got from the KFC Mini-Cricket Kids vs Proteas Tour last year was that there is now a growing interest from kids that want to play cricket in the school, including girls.
  •         A lot of the kids believed that cricket is exclusively a boy’s sport but after meeting the Proteas women a lot of girls have joined the programme.
  •         Shozi hopes that one day he will see one of the kids that played in the KFC Mini-Cricket Kids vs Proteas Tour on TV playing for the Proteas.

Lenore Ciolli – KFC Mini-Cricket Coach

Retired Rondebosch Boys Primary School Teacher, Lenore Ciolli is one of the longest lasting KFC Mini-Cricket coaches in the country having initiated her KFC Mini-Cricket journey in 1983, the same year that Cricket South Africa started the programme.

In 1983, the then school sports administrator, Mr Pieter Minnar, walked into the staff room and informed the teachers that the school was starting a new cricket programme and he wanted volunteers. Lenore did not know much about cricket but the programme sounded like something exciting so she joined the programme as the schools U9 coach.

Pieter was introduced to the programme by none other than the late Bob Woolmer.

Initially there were only four schools in her area that took part in KFC Mini-Cricket, Rondebosch Primary School, Bishops, SACS and Wynberg, now there are 14 schools with 384 kids that take part.

She has been able to meet some amazing people I her journey. In 1995 she got to meet Queen Elizabeth and the Duke of Edinburgh, when they visited the country and went to a KFC Mini-Cricket festival in Langa.

When Gary Kirsten was still a player he used to attend some of the KFC Mini-Cricket Provincial festivals at Newlands. It was always a highlight for the kids and coaches to meet him and get some coaching tips.

When Australia visited South Africa in 1994, Jonty Rhodes and Shane Warne were walking past a festival at Newlands where they saw the kids and stopped to watch the cricket. Needless to say, the kids were so excited to meet their heroes.

Lenore has help the Western Province Cricket union in everything from ticketing to being a team manager. She even serves as the chairperson of the union for a while but she has never strayed from KFC Mini-Cricket. She just loves the sport, loves the kids and enjoys watching children having fun. Her reward is a big smile.
