MIXED FORTUNES AT THE SANLAM KAY MOTSEPE SCHOOLS CUP WHICH KICKED-OFF IN BLOEMFONTEIN

The match of day one of the Sanlam Kay Motsepe Schools Cup National finals, happening in Bloemfontein, saw the Harmony High School Sports Academy from the Free State beat Rosina Sedibane Sports School from Gauteng 3 – 1.

The teams were drawn in Group A, the ‘group of death’, a term used in football when a draw pitts a number of strong teams together, in this case three of the six teams.

All players from Rosina Sedibane, based in laudium in Pretoria, compete in the SuperSport United Academy whereas the Harmony boys are all hand-picked by scouts and therefore already are extremely talented and board at the school and play football on a full time basis.

The win has put Harmony on top of the log going into day two with Rosina Sedibane two points behind.

Rosina Sedibane Team manager, Warren Baktawar, was satisfied with his team’s results today: “We have been competing in the Sanlam Kay Motsepe Schools Cup since 2006 and this is the first time we have made it to the Finals so just being here is exciting.  We were not pleased with the draw which put three top teams competing in one Group, and we were beaten by Harmony, but there are still two League games to go and I feel confident that the boys will settle and do well tomorrow.”

The third key School in Group A, Sol Plaatje Secondary School, from North West, has in the team two players that spent a year at an Academy in Brazil.  The team did not performed well on day one winning one game against Mahlale High School from Mpumalanga 2 – 1 but lost 2 - 0 to Rosina Sedibane and 2 – 0 to outsider, Jojo from the Eastern Cape.

The other team from Gauteng Province, Johannesburg Secondary School, which boasts 10 players who compete in the Orlando Pirates Academy, was drawn in Group C with teams they believed would not pose too much of a problem and this proved right as they won both their games.  The first was a 2 – 0 win against Mafsiakgomo Secondary School from Limpopo and went on to beat Dr R. Cingo Comprehensive School from the Free State 1 – 0.

Reputedly the biggest high school soccer tournament in South Africa, the Sanlam Kay Motsepe Schools Cup offers the National winner a R1-million prize, runners-up R600 000, a third prize of    R500 000 and the school finishing in fourth place receives R400 000.  This prize money excludes the R100 000 that each Provincial winner gets. Prize money is not handed over to schools in cash but is spent on legacy projects identified by each school. Now that the exhilarating action of the Provincial round has come to an end, the national final promises to be the highlight of the school soccer calendar, concluding this year’s season of the under-19 tournament.
