Lions and Knights excel in the Under-19 Coca-Cola T20 Schools Cricket Challenge national finals




There were wins for the Highveld Lions, the Titans and the Knights representatives on the morning of the first day of the Coca-Cola T20 Schools Challenge national finals at the University of Pretoria’s LC De Villiers complex on Friday.

St Stithians, the Lions champions, beat The Dolphins’ Westville Boys High by eight wickets, with SA u-18 batsman Ryan Rickleton knocking an unbeaten 50.

Titans representatives, HoĆ«rskool Waterkloof beat the Warriors’ Kingswood College by five wickets, while Grey College, playing in the colours of the Knights, got the winning runs off the second last ball of the game to beat Cobras reps, Wynberg Boys’ High School, by six wickets.

The six schools competing all won their own franchise T20 titles qualifying for the national finals. They will play two games a day on Friday and Saturday and one on Sunday, with the top two teams meeting in the final on Sunday afternoon.

The afternoon saw both St Stithians and Grey College win their games to emerge unbeaten after day 1 of the national finals.   

The match of the day was the afternoon saw the Lions beat the Titans by 49 runs.

Lion’s Justin Watson, who won R3 000 as Man of the Match was pleased with his performance today.  “We came into this tournament with a game plan, which we stuck to, and it paid off,” said the youngster who is playing in the Coca-Cola T20 for the first time. 

Justin excelled in both his batting and fielding today scoring 40 runs and taking 3 for 14 against Waterkloof Hoerskool  “I am particularly pleased with my bowling today as I have had a bad run lately and all came right today and I am really happy. Tomorrow is another day and as long as we stick to our plan I believe we will do well again.”

Wynberg Boys' High School 131/6 (Ekstrom 28; Victor 2/18). Grey College 132/4 (R Van Tonder 47). Grey College won by 6 wickets (with 1 ball remaining)

Afternoon session
St Stithians College 146/7 (Watson 40, Bester 3/23). Warterkloof Hoerskool 97 all out (Kok 32, Watson 3/12) St Stithians won by 49 runs
