In addition, KFC will also be an associate sponsor for the international and franchise T20 competitions for the next three years. This sponsorship secures KFC’s involvement at the highest level in SA cricket, and provides exciting opportunities for youngsters involved in the KFC Mini-Cricket programme.

David Timm – Chief Marketing Officer, KFC South Africa – commented: “KFC, through the Mini-Cricket programme, promotes an active and balanced lifestyle amongst young boys and girls. Over 100 000 children already partake in the programme across South Africa annually. With KFC now sponsoring cricket at the highest level we hope to make the experience even more meaningful to the cricketers of the future.”

The KFC T20 International Series will give KFC Mini-Cricketers exposure to first-class cricket as well as the opportunity to meet the Proteas, encouraging those already in the programme to continue playing the game and attracting others who want to join in. Since September, KFC has been searching for KFC Mini-Cricket kid ambassadors who will be able to interact with their Protea heroes as player escorts, ball boys as well as being part of the coin toss.

The KFC Mini-Cricketers selected to be a part of the action in the second KFC T20 International against New Zealand in East London hail from the East London Central regions.

WESTERN PROVINCE FINISH THE COCA-COLA KHAYA MAJOLA CRICKET WEEK AS THE TOP TEAM IN SOUTH AFRICA

Western Province (WP) came out on top in the final day of the Coca-Cola Khaya Majola Under-19 Week in Potchefstroom and remained the only side with an unbeaten record. They beat Gauteng by four wickets in the main match of the tournament at Senwes Park Stadium to ensure they finish the tournament with victories in all of their matches.

Gauteng’s opening batsman, Wesley Coulentianos (73) was the main contributor with the bat for his team. He helped them to reach 218 in their allotted 50 overs.

In reply, WP's opening partnership of Dale Brander (39) and Keagan Smith (54) laid the foundation with their partnership of 85 runs. Captain, David Beddinham (45) and Jason Smith (32) also weighed in to secure the victory.

Border’s spin bowler, Hlumelo Notoko (3/19) grabbed a hat-trick of wickets in his side's match against Boland. He caught his first victim, Adrian du Toit (29) from his own bowling before dismissing Hanno Kotze with the next delivery. Kotze was clean bowled with the last delivery of the 18th over. Notoko then got rid of David Stofberg with his next delivery, the first of the 20th over with Yamkela Oliphant assisting with the catch behind the stumps.

KwaZulu-Natal (KZN) recorded a mammoth victory of 199 runs against Easterns on the final day. KZN posted an imposing 325/5 in their allotted overs thanks to half-centuries from Senuran Muthusamy (89), Dudu Zondo (85) and Tyler Trenoweth (51).

Easterns struggled with the chase as five of their first six batsmen could not managing to get off the mark. Of all of them, only Wesley Marshall (30) was able to give some resistance with the bat. Divan Posthumus’ (61) half-century got Easterns to a more respectable score.

Free State finished their week on a high thanks to their captain, Ruben Bouwer’s match winning performance against Mpumalanga. Bouwer (78) was his side’s best performer with both bat and ball. He and Ryan du Plessis (60) shared a 122-run partnership over the fifth wicket to secure an emphatic 117-run victory.

Two players, Marko Barnard (Mpumalanga) and Luc Maingard (KwaZulu-Natal Inland) managed to bag five-wicket hauls. Barnard dismissed five Free State batsmen for 52 runs, while Maingard sent five Eastern Province batsmen packing for an excellent 13 runs.

DU PAVILLON REWRITES THE RECORD BOOKS

KwaZulu-Natal Inland bowler, Daryn du Pavillon, produced what could arguably be the best bowling performance in the 70 years of the Coca-Cola Khaya Majola Under-19 Week. He picked up and outstanding seven wickets for just 18 runs in his side’s limited overs match against hosts, North West on Day Four of the tournament held in Potchefstroom on Wednesday.

He removed the last North West batsman on the second last delivery of his seventh over to restrict them to 75 runs after having dispatched the four frontline batsmen, leaving them struggling on 27/4. Inland won the match by an resounding 161 runs.
Du Pavillon’s bowling figures are without a doubt, the best since 1983. The previous record (after 1983) was held by seam bowler Simon Minnaar of Western Province (WP) who removed seven of Mpumalanga’s batsmen for 26 during the 2004 tournament in Pretoria. In the same match a certain Richard Levi (122) scored a century for WP.
Inland’s Greg Oldfield (100*) has sent a blaring signal to the national selectors. He reached his century from the last delivery of his side’s innings. He missed out narrowly on another century earlier in the week against Griqualand West (Griquas) when he was dismissed on 99.
The main match of the Week will be played between WP and Gauteng at Senwes Park Stadium tomorrow. They are the only unbeaten sides left. WP is also the only side left in the tournament that managed to win all its games.
They kept their unbeaten record thanks to a fourth wicket partnership of 119 runs between Hayes van der Berg (89) and Jason Smith (52) to beat Eastern Province (EP) by four wickets. EP set WP a target of 262 for victory with Andrew Rushmere (89) being the main contributor.
The highest individual innings of the fourth day was scored by Easterns’ Jurie Snyman (115) against Limpopo. He struck 16 fours and a six to help his side to victory.

WESTERN PROVINCE, BORDER AND GAUTENG UNBEATEN AFTER DAY 3

The only two teams who have won all their matches at the end of day three of the 2012 Coca-Cola Khaya Majola Under-19 Week in Potchefstroom are Western Province (WP) and Border.  Gauteng is the only other team that also boasts an undefeated record in the tournament so far. Their first match of the tournament ended in a draw against Griqualand West.

The 16 teams played two Twenty20 matches each on Wednesday.  Only four of the teams namely;  WP; Border; Eastern Province and Gauteng managed to pick up victories in both of their matches.

WP were given a proper scare in their first match against South Western Districts (SWD). Western Province could only win the match by two runs. The team had its unbeaten status secured with a 41 run victory over Free State in his second match of the day.

The most exciting match of the day was definitely the between Border and KwaZulu-Natal Inland at Senwes Park. Inland’s captain, Robert Anderson lead his team from the front with an unbeaten 61 runs from only 51 deliveries. He was supported by Luc Maingard who weighed in with 46 runs.

Border’s captain and opening batsman, Kirwan Christoffels (41, 30b) continued his good form with the bat and laid a good foundation for his team's attempt to keep its undefeated status. Border needed three runs from the last over of Kerwin Mungroo to secure victory. Mungroo bowled well and managed to put the pressure back on Border with them needing two runs from the last delivery.

Runé Oosthuizen (21 *) struck the last delivery through midwicket past the inner ring and ran the through for the two needed runs.

The best performance by a player on the day was by South Western Districts' Arno Moolman. The seamer picked up five wickets while conceding a mere 16 runs. His performance helped his side defeat KwaZulu-Natal by 51 runs.

COCA-COLA KHAYA MAJOLA CRICKET WEEK USED TO GROOM YOUNG UMPIRES

There is always a tremendous amount of activity going on behind the scenes at an event like the Coca-Cola Khaya Majola cricket week, and one of the less noticed is the way in which the tournament is used as a development and training opportunity for the country’s top up-and-coming umpires.
Running the umpire operation at the week in Potchefstroom this year are Murray Brown, Rudi Birkenstock and Sivuyile Mqingwana. Brown is one of the top middle men in the country and this is the fifth time that he has fulfilled this role at the Coca-Cola Khaya Majola week.
“Being here is a very important step in the development curve of our top young umpires,” he says. “This is the first occasion on the cricket ladders at which Cricket South Africa appoints the umpires and it plays a major role in the talent identification process.”
Typically, the umpires in action here will have been identified by their home associations and sent to one of the lower weeks like the under-13s or under-15s and they will have been spotted there as potential first class officials and brought into the system.
At the Coca-Cola Khaya Majola Week Brown, Birkenstock and Mqingwa take the umpires under their wing and monitor, evaluate and advise them on a daily basis. “There are daily group meetings and one-on-one feedback sessions throughout the week and at the end we send a report on each umpire to Cricket South Africa,” Brown says.
“We use the captains’ match evaluations and listen to the comments of the selectors and other experienced cricket people who are at the week and are watching the matches.”
Birkenstock says they are happy with the standard of this year’s group. “It’s early days, but we have seen a number of umpires who look ready to take the next step up the ladder,” he says.
“Standing in first class cricket is still some way off, but we use this week as an opportunity to work on the core competencies of umpiring: decision-making, player management, knowledge of the laws and playing conditions, communication, on-field behaviour and coping with pressure.
“We are fortunate to have weeks like this where we can have a group of potential top umpires together to learn from each other, build team spirit and face five days of pressure.”
At the end of the week two top-rated umpires will stand in the SA Schools game, and the next two will take charge of the SA Schools Colts game.

CENTURIES SCORED ON THE SECOND DAY OF THE 2012 COCA-COLA KHAYA MAJOLA CRICKET WEEK

Two centuries were scored in the afternoon session of the second day of the timed cricket phase in the Coca-Cola Khaya Majola under-19 Week.  Griqualand West’s (Griquas) GM Bruwer (128) and Northerns’ Johann Smit (100 *) ended the run drought in Potchefstroom.

The day's limelight was however stolen by Mpumalanga’s Blake Schraader, who produced an excellent all-round performance against Limpopo to give his side an emphatic nine-wicket victory. He struck an unbeaten 85 runs from just 28. He and Chris Coetzee (45) helped their side to produce the goods.

Limpopo batted first and managed 176 with Mpumalanga’s spinner Wehan Joubert picking up five wickets. In turn, they were restricted to  110 runs in their innings. Limpopo, getting a sniff of a possible victory, declared their second innings on 64/5, Schraader (2/0) was the pick of Mpumalanga’s bowlers.

Johann Smit hit his century from 106 deliveries which helped his side to the second resounding victory of the day against Eastern Province (EP).  He struck 13 boundaries.

GM Bruwer fought a solitary battle against KwaZulu-Natal Inland. He scored all but 59 of his team’s runs. It was however, not enough to save them from defeat. Most of the batting line-up struggled in the morning session with last year’s South African Schools’ opening bowler, Craig Kirsten (5/33) leading the pack. Wehan Joubert (5/35) also picked up a five-wicket haul. The best bowling performance of the day belonged to KwaZulu-Natal Inland’s, Darryn du Pavillon. He grabbed six wickets for only 27 runs against Griqualand West.

Border’s opening bowlers, Ngazibini Sigwili (4/17) and Aphiwe Elembi (2/10) had Nambia in deep trouble, removing their first four batsmen without any of them managing to score a run. There was nevertheless, one run on the scoreboard when they lost their wickets thanks to a bye.  Border won the match on the first innings.

Vasili Orros (77) and Sachinta Galhenhage (29) shared a 97-run partnership for the sixth wicket which saved the Free State from being bowled out for an embarrassing total in their match against the South Western Districts (SWD). The two joined each other at the crease with the score at 37/5. After Galhenhage was trapped leg before wicket by spinner Lance Roelofse, Free State could add only eight runs to their total before being bowled out. Free State returned to bundle SWD out for a mere 50 runs.

ORGANISER OF THE COCA-COLA KHAYA MAJOLA CRICKET CELEBRATES HIS 20 SEASON WITH THE TOURNAMENT AS WELL AS HIS 50TH BIRTHDAY

Tomorrow (Tuesday) is Morgan Pillay’s 50th birthday. The honorary organising secretary of the Coca-Cola Khaya Majola cricket week finds himself in Potchefstroom for the occasion - a long way from his family and home – but that’s the way it has been for the last 20 years in a row and hopes it’s going to be that way for a couple of years still.

December 18th always falls in the middle of South Africa’s biggest schoolboy cricket tournament and Morgan has been passionately involved.  First he was part of the organising committee and 17 years ago was made the permanent organising secretary.

“It’s tough being away from home of course,” he says, “but I get to spend my birthday every year surrounded by the many great friends that I have made at this week and in the service of the youth, which is what I am really passionate about.”

Pillay is a Mathematics teacher by profession and is deeply involved in schools and youth cricket in the KwaZulu-Natal Inland region. He has been manager of the South African under-19 team every year since 1995 and, he says, nothing makes him happier than being involved with young people.

He also sees his ongoing service as a tribute to his great friend, the late Khaya Majola.

“Khaya always gave me 100% of his attention when I was with him and he gave me so much advice on both cricket and life. The Coca-Cola Khaya Majola Cricket Week is his living legacy and I am proud to be part of it,” he says.

Morgan Pillay is only the fourth organizing secretary since Coca-Cola came on board 34 years ago. His wish is to get to 21 years of service, but no-one here is betting against him celebrating his 60th birthday at the Khaya Majola in 10 years time.
