Big wins and bonus points galore on day 2 of the U19 Coca-Cola T20 Schools Cricket challenge


HoĆ«rskool Waterkloof, representing the Titans franchise, knocked up the highest score to date in the 2013/14 Coca-Cola T20 Schools Cricket Challenge national finals, happening at the University of Pretoria’s LC De Villiers complex this weekend. This win also gave them a valuable bonus point which will count in their favour when finalizing the league.

Waterkloof batted first and scored an impressive 217/1 thanks to 114 not out by Evan Jones.  In return Westville Boys High School, representing the Dolphins, only managed 130 in 19.3 allowing Waterkloof to win by 87 runs.

St Stithians College (representing the Lions) is the only team to remain unbeaten in the tournament after day 2.

The school won both their matches today. They were awarded two bonus points today. The first coming after they convincingly beat Wynberg Boys’ High by 48 runs in their first game of the day.  After batting first the Lions franchise representatives scored 177/7 in the allotted 20 overs.  Wynberg Boys' High replied with 129/9 in their 20 overs.  They scored their second bonus point in the afternoon after beating Kingswood College by 119 runs thanks to 102 runs from Coca-Cola SA U19 player, Ryan Rickelton.

Grey College (Knights) walloped Kingswood College (Warriors) by 7 wickets in their first game of the day. Kingswood opened the batting ending on 119/9 in their 20 overs. Grey comfortably reached the target of 120 in 14.2 overs securing them a bonus point. The target was easily chased down thanks to 97 not out by Reinhardt Bezuidenhout.

The afternoon saw Wynberg notch up their first national final win, which also earned them a bonus point, by thrashing Westville by 6 wickets.  Westville only managed 96 all out in 20 overs, losing their last wicket on the last ball of their innings. Wynberg hit the runs in 13.4 overs.  Michael Lords was awarded the R3 000 man of the match award for Wynberg after scoring 45 off 35 balls.  Robin Kriel took 3/10 for Wynberg.

The final game of the day saw Grey College lose to Waterkloof by 3 wickets and 7 balls to spare to break their winning streak. 

Grey college were never able to get their innings going losing wickets continuously throughout their innings and only managed to score 115/9 in their allotted overs. Wihan Victor put up the only resistance with a quick 32 in 23 balls to try to put up a defendable total.

Waterkloof were coasting to victory thanks to Janneman Malan and captain Willem Ludick getting 49 and 41 respectively. When Malan went out with the score on 98/3, the game was all but over until some inspirational captaincy by Grey College’s captain Christiaan Geel made Waterkloof work for their victory finally coming home with only three wickets in hand.
