Kgwahlele Primary School win the Limpopo Danone Nations Cup Provincial Final

Kgwahlele Primary School from the Waterberg region were crowned  Limpopo’s Danone Nations Cup Provincial champions this past weekend, 26 March at Seshigo Ground C in Polokwane  after beating Lerale Primary School from Mopani region 3 – 2 on penalties. The game was tied at 1-all at the end of regulation time.  Kgwahlele Primary School will now go on to represent their province at the Danone Nations Cup National Finals to be held on the 11th June in Gauteng.

Kgwahlele coach, Lerumo Kekane, could not contain his excitement after being crowned the Danone Nations Cup Limpopo champions.   “This is the second time we have played in the Danone nations Cup and getting through to the finals was a huge accomplishment, something we have been wishing for.  It was not easy having to face the best under 12 teams in the province, the team that I believe was our main stumbling block was Benny’s Care primary, but I just told my boys to go out there, enjoy the game and not worry about the other teams.  That’s exactly what they did and we won. Now we are going to focus on the bigger challenge; the national finals.” 11 year-old Vincent Setsiba from Kgwahlele, was top goal scorer of the day with three goals.

North West and Mpumalanga are the next Provinces to host their finals on 16 April 2011 at Ikageng Stadium in Potchefstroom and Ackerville Sports Ground in Witbank respectively, followed by the Northern Cape on 07 May at the Galeshewe Stadium, Kimberley.

The Danone Nations Cup World Final is the biggest soccer tournament for children between the ages of 10 and 12 in the world.  Every year there are 40 countries that participate and currently all countries are holding qualifiers to find the one team that will represent each respective country in the World Finals.  In 2010 all countries converged on South Africa and in 2011 Spain will host the tournament. “This tournament has become so popular that many more countries than 40 apply to participate but due to logistics Groupe Danone has decided to keep the number at 40,” said Sandra Dorville, Communications Manager, Danone South Africa.  “Our aim in sponsoring this event is to touch the lives of as many youngsters a possible around the world and encourage them to live healthy lifestyles.  The tournament is now in its 11th year and to date we have reached over 15 million people around the world.”
