Benny’s Care Academy from Vhembe Region were crowned the Limpopo Copa Coca-Cola Provincial winners after beating Makgoka High School from Capricorn region 5-4 on penalties after neither team managed to score during regulation time. The finals took place in Malamulele stadium, Giyani, on Saturday 19 March.
After being knocked out at the district phase of Copa Coca-Cola last year, Benny’s Care Academy were not tipped to win in 2011, but the players seemed to have taken up the challenge and from the first game of the day they showed confidence and determination and fought hard to win the tournament.
Benny’s Elias “Tiego” Mphothi, won the goalkeeper of the tournament: “This is the start of great things to come for our team, and we are looking forward to the national finals. We came here prepared and we were match fit to face any opponent.” Many of the Benny’s Care pupils who were playing on Saturday are also part of the Benny’s Sports Development Academy; founded in 2004 - two years after the birth of Benny’s Care Academy - with the sole purpose of developing football excellence in young boys. The Academy has been involved in a number of development tournaments over the years and has won a number of titles. At the moment Benny’s Sports Development Academy has over 400 boys, aged between 7 and 20 enrolled at the school.
Makgoka High School took home two honors: Top goalscorer and Player of the Tournament awards, both going to central midfielder, Thabiso Kutumela. “Even though I am disappointed about the final score, I am comforted by the recognition which is a reflection of good team work. I would not have done it on my own and give my team mates credit for helping me. “
Benny’s Care Academy wins R40 000 as the provincial winner and will join Mohloli High School (Gauteng), Kakamas High School (Northern Cape), Groutville High School (KwaZulu Natal), Ndamase Secondary School (Eastern Cape), HTS (Free State) Freddie Sithole High (Mpumalanga) and Sol Plaatjie High (North West) at the National Finals to be held at the Galeshewe Stadium in Kimberley from 31th March to 2nd April.
