KFC Mini-Cricket Kids beat the Proteas and win the KFC Mini-Cricket Kids vs Proteas Tour

The KFC Mini-Cricket Kids from Lugxogxo Junior Secondary School played and beat the Proteas this week in the season decider of the KFC Mini-Cricket Kids vs Proteas Tour.

It took a “super over” to decide the game after the teams were tied on 51 runs each when the kids had faced their allotted 8 overs.

It was an ideal ending to a fantastic season in which three schools and their KFC Mini-Cricket kids got to meet their heroes and enjoy themselves in a series of KFC Mini-Cricket Matches.

Leading into this game the score was 1-1 between the KFC Mini-Cricket Kids and the Proteas, so the  honours of the series rested on the final match.

The Proteas team was led by Mangaliso Mosehle and included Aaron Phangiso, Khaya Zondo, Beuran Hendricks, Reeza Hendricks, Stephen Cook, Raisibe Ntozakhe and Ayabonga Khaka.

The kids won the toss and  sent the Proteas in to bat. The school bowlers kept bowling a full length throughout the game so even if they strayed a little with their line,  it was not that easy for the Proteas to score many runs. Under pressure, the Proteas had to take risky runs and this led to a lot wickets coming from runouts.

Halom Sangaliso managed to run out both Stephen Cook and Raisibe Ntozakhe in the same over. Zangqa Cinga and Mamkeli Athini bowled well for their team and between the two of them they took 4 wickets and in the end of theProteas scored 51 runs in their 8 overs.

The Proteas bowlers followed the example that the KFC Mini-Cricket Kids set by bowling and fielding extremely well.It was difficult to tell who was going to win the game. It was a close tussle.

Mangaliso Mosehle and Reeza Hendricks set things up for the Proteas and the KFC Mini-Cricket Kids could only score 10 runs off the first 2 overs. The KFC Mini-Cricket Kids, thanks to Zangqa Cinga and Mamkeli Ntando, batted well and against the bowling attack of Stephen Cook and Beuran Hendricks, they got themselves back into the game. The highlight of their innings was a huge 6 hit off the bowling of Beuran Hendricks.

The Proteas players Raisibe Ntozakhe, Aaron Phangiso, Khaya Zondo and Ayabonga Khaya kept the pressure on the kids to stop them from chasing down the total. In the end the kids ran a single off the last ball to tie the game at 51 runs each and sent the game into a super over.

The KFC Mini-Cricket Kids batted first in the super over. Man of the match Mamkeli Athini managed to face all 6 of the balls in the super over and scored 12 runs which included a 6 and a 4.This was too much for Proteas batsmen Khaya Zondo and Mangaliso Mosehle, who were restricted to 7 runs in their super over.

Proteas player, Mangaliso Mosehle, said, “The KFC Mini-Cricket Kids played an outstanding match and they showed us how well they can play under extreme pressure of a super over. We would like to have won the match but more important than winning is that we had a lot of fun,” he said.

Graeme Smith, former Proteas captain and KFC Mini-Cricket assistant coach said the standard of cricket from the KFC Mini-Cricket Kids was high throughout the tour. “It was great to see for the development of the game. I enjoyed the series again this year and this year's new development in the series, the improved coaching sessions, benefitted the KFC Mini-Cricket kids and created very competitive matches."

Lugxogxo Junior Secondary School KFC Mini-Cricket coach, Thandazile Kundla, had a message for all the other schools in the competition, "Many schools think that they are too small or that their areas are not well known for their cricket but we are a small but passionate school in a rural area and we managed to win this competition to play against the Proteas. If you believe in your school and you love the game then next year you need to enter the competition and believe that you can win this amazing opportunity. Playing against the Proteas is a dream come true for our kids and what they learned from this experience is priceless."
